How would Joey Maxim be rated

Yeah just short of great for me. Really really good. The Robinson win is fantastic - only time he was ever stopped. No matter what the reason behind it was- it’s a nice feather in the cap so to speak.
But maxim had natural advantages in that fight- many of his wins and some of his notable losses were razor close and debatable to downright contentious. Patterson, Walcott 1 etc, to me he never really separated himself from the pack like the true hallmark of a true great.
If I compared him to a more modern fighter (not in style) but in terms of really good but lacking the Extra gear to be great i’d compare him to Winky Wright.

 

It changes our opinions . It was near the end of the fight Ray , was well in front before he began to flounder everyone agreed he was putting on a masterful clinic of boxing . As always only after the fight did the revisionism begin.
