Looking at Lewis's record, he beat a lot of good fighters and especially a lot of good punchers. But most of his opponents weren't exactly good mover types. Tucker is probably the best example and he was past it. Holyfield was quite stationary at this point. Morrison, Briggs, Bruno, Tua, old Tyson, and Mercer weren't exactly known for their fast feet. How do you think Lewis would match up against guys who could hit and move constantly? Guys like Pinklon Thomas, younger Tucker, younger Fury, etc.? While i wouldn't favour any of those guys to beat Lewis, i can't help but think he could be upset by guys who could move and make him move constantly.
It depends on the man. But I believe that he'd still do fine against em, though likely would have hard fought bouts against guys like Young, Thomas, Page, and otherwise. It all depends on if you're talking about true movers like them, or so called slicksters like Tubbs and Byrd who could get measured and roughed up real easy- Not to take a lot away from em. More trouble with guys like Ali, less trouble with guys like Walcott.
Yes agreed. Walcott and Charles aren't durable enough to give Lewis a hard time beyond a few rounds. But durable movers with good stamina, i can see them bothering Lewis.
Biggs (not Briggs) was known for his movement, & Lewis walked him down fairly easily. Thomas couldn't even outbox Coetzee (he was lucky just to get a draw IMO) so I certainly don't see him getting anything going vs. Lewis. Tucker loses to Lewis even on his best day IMO. Fury is the one fight that I think would be interesting given Fury had immense size to go along w/ his movement. But I'd still favor Lennox to overpower him in the end.
I've always thought that he, like some other big heavies such as Joshua and Fury, would struggle with smaller faster men like Ali, Holmes and Usyk. I think he has an easier time finding the bigger movers like Fury though.
Biggs was a completely done fighter post Tyson. Apart from drug habits, he didn't have great fundamentals and his confidence was shot. I wouldn't look at this fight as any evidence personally.
Great. Lewis would make the ring super small with his calculated style and he has an insane game at long range, being at the end of his 1-2 is a bad proposition. He would be difficult to outjab even though you could run away. Plant your feet and you are right in his perfect range to fire upon. To beat Lewis you need toughness, size, power and will. Even Mercer and Mavrovic who lost in good fights had these dimensions. I don't see someone like Chris Byrd giving him too many issues, especially with that immaculate right of Lewis which could come straight or around the guard. Fury would be too big of a target, there is too much size to move on a guy like Lennox who could track him and smack him up. I don't think Usyk would win either having seen him hurt vs. Fury in a very close fight.
I don’t know about size being a pre-requisite to beating Lewis if we’re talking about the very top echelon of fighters. That probably does apply among the movers specifically, though.
This is a good question since I don't recall Lewis beating any really slippery types. Off a hunch I reckon he'd be OK but you just never know.
I don't think the fight was that close to be honest. I had it 8-4 Usyk plus knockdown. Besides Lewis got caught with a left from Briggs and would have gone down if the ropes didn't hold him up. He was also hurt by Holyfields left hook. Usyk is a southpaw with a fast left hand that Lewis would struggle to see. I can see Usyk staggering Lewis with his left. Lewis-Usyk is a 50-50 fight. Lewis has his immense physical strength and his uppercuts which would give Usyk issues. Plus Lewis has that straight right hand. On the other hand, Usyk has more stamina, can throw more punches, will force Lewis to expend more energy due to his movement, and Usyk's straight left could cause major issues to Lewis since i don't think Lewis had the defensive know how to pick up and defend vs a southpaw left hand. Very close fight.
Usyk was beat up and hurt, it was a good contest but 8-4 feels fair on the wide side. Lewis also walked Briggs down laughing in his face eating his punches, too. 50/50 fight is really overrating Usyk. If Fury is touching Usyk up, after so many benders and mental breakdowns, hurting him, I don't see how he would fight Lennox close. And to win, Usyk had to dig and begin throwing power shots. So that fight doesn't really apply for me, as if he stood there and banged with Lewis he would get knocked out.
