How would other big punchers have done against Ali using the rope a dope,in Zaire?
Would that sort of tactic only really have successful against Foreman?

I think a prime Tyson would've wrecked Ali had he sat on the ropes Tyson is a more precise puncher and wouldn't just be wailing away.

Tyson was a much more precise puncher.....
But , he'd struggle much more than even
Foreman did with Ali's grappling tactics.
Ali's underrated physicality and ability to
push ,pull, hold, would fluster Tyson
just as much as it did Foreman.

Factor in Ali's mind games that he'd use
before the fight, and Tyson fragile psych,
Ali very well could have Tyson in the same
state of mind he had Foreman in.
The hypothetical fight of Tyson vs Ali
ending in a similar fashion as The Rumble
    in the Jungle

If Tyson unloaded the volume that Foreman did he would gas out faster than Foreman

I'm sorry but there's no way sitting on the ropes would work vs Tyson I don't care who you are Ali could win by sticking and moving but not by primarily sitting on the ropes.

Agreed, and I believe Ali was a much better puncher than Douglas when he wanted to dig his toes into the mat and set down on his shots

Douglas fought at range using a very good jab and had an 83 inch reach and weighed 230 pounds his back also never touched the ropes and he fought primarily at center ring.

We're talking primarily about the Ali who was past his prime who sat on the ropes doing the rope and dope not the stick and move fleet footed fighter of years before.

Watch the early rounds of Ali Foreman ,Ali consistently nailed Foreman with big straight right hands. A couple of those puts Mikey into a holding pattern before attacking again. Ali wouldn't fight Tyson like he did Foreman, except for the holding and clinching. Angelo Dundee said in an interview that one factor that was overlooked as to why George tired so quicky was the strength of Ali, he grabbed George , pulled him, pushed him , mauled and clinched. This taxed Foremans strength as Ali was far more relaxed. Ali never laid on the ropes with Frazier and he wouldn't with Tyson for the same reason. Too dangerous. The only version of Ali I could see Tyson beating is an old one, the Ali of the 3rd Norton fight is the first that comes to mind.

Joe Louis would be a real threat.Joe's all-round package of power, timing, handspeed
and precision would have that version of Ali in serious trouble.

@Reinhardt no disrespect but you have missed the point of this thread.

Look at what @Fergy said he clearly stated Ali would be using the rope a dope tactic and you're saying Ali would fight Tyson differently which is not what the question is.

The question is how would other punchers have fared against the Ali who used the same tactics as he did vs Foreman aka the rope a dope.

Hence I do not think those tactics would work vs Tyson.

Ali was inventive. His tactics in Zaire were specific to the circumstances including a soft sixteen foot ring. When the circumstances changed his tactics changed.

No I understand, it's just the premise of the question. Sort of like asking, could Ali slug it out in a brawl with Liston,,,it ain't happening

But it's a big puncher he'd be facing, so perhaps he'd have to resort to something similar to fighting George.
