One of my favorite boxers of the 80's with an awesome left jab but how would he do against likes of Wilder or Joshua, or Dylan White?
Beats them all at his best except possibly Fury and Usyk. Rock solid chin, ATG jab, I think he'd be very competitive in this era.
Thomas would be a Top-5 Heavyweight, today, and have offered his peers a real challenge. Him and Usyk would have been worth a watch, IMO.
Let's take the best of Pinklon. He beat s most of the division. Fury beats him but he whips AJ. Would like to see him against Wilder!
With that awesome jab of his, he would beat most guys for sure, and certainly be a belt holder at some point.
Thomas had pretty terrible defense and was only 6'3. He had a great jab and was tough. Wilder would **** him up. Thomas would be catching right hands. Fury does his thing. Ditto Usyk. Joshua most likely outpoints him. Thomas never showed that kind of consistency and would be the smaller man. Joshua would have to work for it though. Thomas most likely decisions Ruiz. Bad style matchup for Ruiz. Ortiz is finished, therefore he loses. Whyte is past it was never very good. He most likely loses too. Joyce destroys him in the second half of the fight. Beats Parker and Chisora. Hrgovic is close to 50-50.
I think that Pinklon would have trouble in any area stringing a bunch of victories together. at the top level.. I tend to think that the 80's had some very sound technicians with decent power..and feel most of the guys around then have the overall better skills than the top ten of today...
Yeah, Pinklon for largely self-inflicted reasons had a short run at the top. The classic "couldn't handle success" kind of a guy.
In his prime he was more than decent. He had a very effective jab…one of the very best in his era. His chin was pretty solid, he had good movement and he could bang a bit. He was around Usyk’s proportions from what I remember, so I doubt his size would necessarily be a disadvantage. I could see a focused Thomas being a problem to most in this era and as it stands now with boxers fighting so rarely, he’d probably have been in the top 4 or 5 for years!
