I'm never going to knock either of these fighters but if you're talking about the greatest welterweight against the greatest lightweight at welter, well you gotta go with the welterweight. That said, I think SRR would absolutely have to create distance between him and Duran because if it's an inside war, Duran's changes increase dramatically.

Duran was very quick slipping and rolling with punches against Leonard. I think RL missed more punches that night than he had missed in his previous 3 fights.

The pound 4 pound greatest fighter in history vs the fighter with possibly the best single night in history esp when considering the fighter he defeated. Duran was as close to the perfect fighting machine that night as u can possibly get. There are no film of Robinson at welter. But some of the best trainers, and sports writers, who saw Robinson at that time say Ray was as close to invincible as a human can get. I'm inclined to beleive them. So Robinson would win.... But it wouldn't be easy.

i do believe that robinson could land a left hook while going backwards. he would make it stick where leonard couldn't.

    robinson > leonard

Were lucky in that both Burt and his dad saw the welter Robinson and Burt agrees with the writers of that day. Interestingly his dad who saw Greb fight thought Harry would be a little too rough for Robby.

The idea the SRR avoided "Panamanian style" fighters is the biggest laugh I've had on here in a long time. Duran was a great fighter, maybe the best at lt weight. He was not nearly as great at welterweight. SRR was the man at 147 so he has to be given the edge here. Decision win for SRR in a fight where he is able to keep Duran off of him unlike Montreal.

I would consider myself one of Duran's biggest fans. But anyone who thinks he is going to stand right on top of Robinson, and impose himself the way he did against Leonard is delusional. If he does he gets stopped before the halfway mark.

I think this would go down as a classic that would be talked about for years. Robinson was at his best as a welterweight. While Duran pulled off an outstanding victory against Leonard in Montreal, the Leonard he fought that night was not yet as seasoned as Robinson when he was welterweight champ. I believe that would have made the difference and that Sugar Ray Robinson would have won a close decision over Montreal Duran.

Anyone on ESB who thinks that the welterweight edition of Roberto Duran would come close to beating the prime welterweight version of Ray Robinson have not a clue to the greatness of a motivated Sugar Ray Robinson that I saw ringside...At almost 6 ft tall with an ego to dominate, along with an explosevness of a coiled rattlesnake SRR would batter the much shorter Duran to a dominate victory...
There will never be as good a welterweight as Ray Robinson again. Nature threw away he mold...
