How would Roy Jones jr. (who fought Derrick Harmon) handle the current LHW top 5?

Roy could be hit, he didn't have any defense... Just speed and athleticism. When you rely solely on that you leave plenty of room for someone like Kovalev, and even Stevenson to land a KO shot on you. Kovalev has better fundamentals than Roy, he'll probably be able to fight at a decent level at LHW for the rest of his 30s. Stevenson relies on athleticism more than Roy did, honestly surprised he hasn't been found out again. He's going to fall off even worse than Roy did when age catches up with him and/or when he steps up in class again.

jones would unify Adonis and Jurgens (easily) but his problem would be the guy called kovalev, who is now prime.

I am not sure roy would want to face someone like him, though it would be even stevens who wins, KO4Clev with a fair chance of a KO win, roy jones with a hard fought slim points win on the run.

What do you mean he wasn't that good?

Did you not see him against Woods and Ruiz in 2002 and 2003?

He wasn't at his peak. In my opinion, his absolute peak was his SMW-early LHW period. But he was still a hell of a fighter before dropped back from HW.

No, what you mean is: He didn't have a conventional defence.

His insane speed and reflexes were his unorthodox defence. And the for the majority of his career it was a great defence for him.

Before he lost to Tarver, how many times had he been knocked down or been in trouble in 50 fights?

I would say that although Kovalev and Stevenson certainly possess the attributes needed to have knocked out Roy, they would have found him extremely difficult to time.

Roy didn't have the fundamentals to fall back on.

Stevenson has poor fundamentals. It's only a matter of time until he slows down and gets exposed again.

What I mean is that when that faded he had NO actual defense to fall back on. And even with his speed, athleticism, reflexes I'm not convinced a good puncher couldn't catch and KO him in his prime like some are. I'd have him a heavy favorite against Stevenson due to the fact that he was basically a more well rounded and complete version of him in his prime, but Kovalev? Now that would have been interesting. Roy never faced anyone like him when he was at his peak.

hes 38 isn't he? hes already got old in boxing terms.

clearly and blatantly hes nothing like jones. but I agree that Adonis will get found out if he steps up, and was lucky to face a faded dawson.

Yes, he should have retired a long time ago. But it's easy to say that when you're not stood in his shoes.

The only reason Stevenson hasn't been found out is because he's protected by Haymon.

    Right, my mistake.

Yes, I agree. But the version of him that fought Harmon in 2001, still possessed those great attributes.

I respect your opinion. Kovalev would obviously have been a very dangerous opponent for him. I'm a fan of Kovalev. But when I look at how a guy like Pascal was able to hit him with 4/5 overhand rights that were telegraphed with no leverage, it makes me believe that Roy wouldn't have much trouble finding him.

It would actually be a dream match up for me. I think Roy would had to have been very aggressive right from the opening bell, and he'd have had to have caught him with something big to have immediately gained his respect.
