How do you feel James "Buster Douglas would have done against some of the other ATG HW's that night he hit close to perfection and KO'd Tyson.

How would he do against the following and would he have beat any of them?

    Muhammad Ali
    Joe Louis
    Joe Frazer
    Rocky Marciano
    Jersey Joe Walcott
    Floyd Patterson
    Sonny Liston
    Jack Dempsey
    Larry Holmes
    George Foreman
    Evander Hollyfield
    Lennox Lewis
    Vitali Klitschko
    Wladimir Klitschko

    Very well.

I think we sometimes discount how dangerous and effective a B level fighter can be on their best night.

Douglas kept overextending with his jab vs Tyson, Mike try a few times to counter this faulty jab with the uppercut but his usual amazing timing wasn`t there until he finally countered him with uppercut and knocked him down, Foreman had an amazing uppercut and set it up with a better jab than the one Douglas was throwing that night, I think George would punish Buster`s faulty jab and Holy would have because he was a brilliant counter puncher, Tyson said Holy was the greatest counter puncher he had seen. I feel Douglas would have stood a better chance with the fighters on this list that had short arms like Tyson, Frazier would have had problems because he couldn`t close distance as well as Marciano to land the hook (Marciano used a subtle shuffle) every time Tyson loaded up Douglas would skip backwards and that would affect the amount of damage Frazier could do with his hooks.

Douglas wasn't a B level fighter he was a B level achiever though never gave his career 100%. Skilled fighter though , B level fighters lack the talent , can't say Douglas lacked talent just heart.

it is like asking how would Hearns do on the night Barkley beat him in 1988.. Not as good as when he took the fight seriously.

I also think he would do very well, and I think he would probably do much better than most anticipate.

douglas had one of those very rare nights where an average athlete just puts together every thing for one perfect performance. the training, emotional state etc..... on that night, douglas would have given any champion in any era a fight for their lives. liken it to a hitter having four home runs in a game. a quarterback throwing for an ungodly amount of yards and touch downs etc...

He'd beat Walcott, Marciano, and Patterson for sure, in my opinion. And I think he would possibly upset a few others. People make him out to be a one-hit wonder, but he'd also beaten Greg Page, Oliver McCall, and other decent names. He was no Rocky Balboa, but a respectable contender who made the most of his second title shot.

The first question that you ever ask with a weak champion is:

"What is his second best win?"

If the answer is "not a very good one", then congratulations for achieving the ultimate prize in the sport, but I won't bet a penny on you , against anybody else who won it!

Could he have beaten some of these guys?

    Sure.

Should we be favoring him over them?

    Absolutely not!

    Who he beats:
    Rocky Marciano
    Jersey Joe Walcott
    Floyd Patterson
    Sonny Liston
    Jack Dempsey

    He loses to the rest.

Like the Tyson match, it really depends on which version of those guys he faced. If he fought all of them on one of their worst nights, I'm sure he'd do fine against a lot of them.

If he was fighting them at their very best, or if he fought Tyson at his very best, probably not.

Douglas may be the biggest under achiever in boxing even though he did when the championship. The guy always had a lot of talent, just lacked motivation and self discipline.

    Decisions Louis
Beats any version of Frazier but FOTC Frazier
    Stops Rocky on cuts
    Decisions Wallcott
    KO's patterson
    KO'ed by Liston
Weathers early storm against Dempsey to take a decision
    Decisioned by Holmes
    Ko'ed by Foreman
Too close to call with Holyfield
    Ko'ed by Lewis

6-6-1 against the field in my eyes. That Buster Douglas was a legit ATG at heavyweight.
