How Would prime Tommy, do against the guys that were champ before him? John L Sullivan James J Corbett Bob Fitzsimmons James J Jeffries All fights set at 20 rounds?
Burns was fast on his feet had an excellent righthand punch was a good infighter and ring general.Unfortunately stylistically and physically he doesn't match up well with any of those who came before him, imo. Sullivan would be too strong and aggressive for him. Corbett a bit too slippery. Fitz hit too hard. Jeffries too big,and durable. Just my thoughts.
I think Tommy did well when he faced some of those over matched challengers for his title, but I agree mate here. I followed boxing for years but never realised just how small he actually was till recently. I know he had that decent wingspan but I can't see him getting lucky against those mentioned.
Over 20, Queensbury rules? * I think Burns decisions O'Sullivan. Seemed to have a pronounced speed advantage and I think he uses that to good effect. * Burns had the better of a slippery O'Brien on two occasions. I could see him pressuring effectively and securing a win against Corbett, too. * Fitz might be a bridge too far, though I think Burns would be a live dog in that fight. * Jeffries is probably just too damned big and grinds Burns down late after dropping some early rounds.
Sullivan catches up to him in a good fight. Tommy beats Corbett like a redheaded stepchild after a few rounds. He closed the distance fast and with proper technique and aggression. In 2 out of 3 fights Ruby Robert catches him late. Jim too much of an immovable object.
