He did a good job to me. He doesn't have as much personality as Briggs does but he's not dry either. He knows the sport and gives honest views that a lot of people can agree with or at least respect.

I would agree with this. He reminds me of the kid who studied the back of baseball cards and because he had a **** ton of info on stats, he thought he knew the game.

What prompts you to say that, M? Something about his performance lead you to believe he couldn't sustain it weekly?

Good and professional .. although boxing analysts tend to be a lot more relaxed and laid back, plus much more opinionated. He wouldn't work out that well as a full time analyst, boxing guys just have a different style than other sports analysts do.

    J.R.

Care to expand on your "laid back" and "opinionated" points? Maybe an example of who you mean. Also, could you more sharply define the difference between boxing anaslyts and other sports?

This is not some condescending way of disagreeing; I'm genuinely interested in your thoughts.

If you were putting somebody in Merchant's spot, H -- bypassing Max -- Would you feel confident with Gill over all the names mentioned in the media, adnauseam?

Well-- Let's just say I think Vali is a bit too Philly / old school oriented to be objective in modern boxing. Vai is an old school guy in a new school world. My hunch is Vai does not like the champions out there in general. Too many boxing media people today go out of their way to degrade the sport to make headlines.

If Vai was on the air on a week to week basis, I think he would create a rift with boxing's newer fan base.

While a guy like Kellerman might ruffle some feathers, he does promote the sport.

You feel so negatively toward Vai, who do you like , that we might know in the States?

Two points: You don't think "xenophobe's" a tad strong. Second: "no boxing experience"? Vai had 80 amateur fights. That's not chopped liver.

In your mind, what delineates a critical poster from a xenophobe?

Noway, I'd bring back Jones jr.
but as far as the ESPN Boxing guest's go, Gill suprised me the most.
I liked his input & appreciation and know of the sport overall.

Interesting observation, M. I'd like ta think one could stay objective: good is good. Hope it hasn't been coloring my posts over the years...even though I date back to the original Mendoza.
