How would you advise Jack Dempsey and/or Joe Frazier, if the two, at their peaks, were to have a 15 round boxing contest?
If this goes to more than a couple of posts Seamus will step in with it wouldnt have happened because Frazier is black.**** me I'm bored.
Dempsey - To jump on Frazier as quickly as possible and nail him. Frazier - To somehow avoid Jack's early rushes and attempt to take the fight into the latter phase when it would turn into a 50/50 battle of attrition.
Would be a hell of a match up, I wouldn't know where to start. I suppose I'd tell jack to pick his punches and combos carefully, try to time his head movement patterns and to maintain a high guard, his fast combo hooks, and guard would leave him open for getting countered by that left hook, considering joes constant bobbing. That said, I'd tell frazier to keep bobbing, changing pace and rhythm so he is not timed, and so dempsey can't get off his flurrys of punches. Exploit his low guard, maintain a steady workrate to keep dempsey off balance.
If Dempsey's guard comes up, do his ribs become more accessible? One question is how should Dempsey use his right. A lot of people might see this fight as two guys with great lefts, but Jack's right a bit more dangerous than Frazier's (though in truth Frazier could mix in his right fairly well). But, if Jack throws his right much, will that counter-productively create openings for Frazier to work in his left?
I don't think it would matter what you told either man to do because both of them really only knew one way to fight. They were both "seek and destroy" type fighters. Maybe I would tell Dempsey to jump on Frazier from the opening bell since Joe was a slow starter but Jack would do that anyway. This seems like a pat 'em on the back and say "Go get him" type of fight to me and it would be one hell of a contest.
Yup except I don't see it fifty / fifty after a few rounds .. favors Joe .. Dempsey very dangerous early ...
I dont think anyone would have to advise Dempsey to jump on someone early. THat was what he always did. He came out very aggressive. For Joe he may be able to fight Dempsey in the same style he used against Jerry Quarry the second fight or George Foreman in their rematch. He also used it against Stander in spots. Standing up and using his boxing skills. Since Dempsey is a crouching, come forward fighter Frazier may be able to outbox him. Joe had a nice underated skillset.
What would you advise Dempsey if your going into round six, Dempsey got the first two rounds, round three disputable, Frazier had the better of the last two rounds, neither fighter in too bad a shape but Frazier looks the bit fresher?
Dempsey would be in trouble in that case. Joe was one of those fighters that like a great NFL running back that seem to get stronger as the game went on. Well Frazier seemingly got stronger as the fight went on.
I think Frazier matches up pretty well on paper or in the ring with Dempsey. Joe could meet fire with fire but it may be a bit smarter to box him for a few rounds but I could also see Joe taking the fight right to Jack.
