It makes plenty of sense. Ortiz was out of his depth and would have been eventually stopped. These guys other than Martinez don't have the ring IQ to trouble PBF. You have to be a smart fighter with good technical skills to beat PBF. Pac won't do it he's relies too much on speed and athletic ability he's not a thinking man's fighter. He would get figured out and beat up. Cotto won't either he fights dumb and melts down when faced with adversity. These guys don't have the ability to make on the fly adjustments to counter what PBF is doing and then react to counter what PBF does next. JMM was a perfect test because despite being outsized he was a master boxer and I expected him to expose some flaws in PBF's game but he still had no clue as to how to get to PBF effectively.

The only decent shot Juan landed was a right hand that Floyd didnt see coming

The right to the body is a good shot if you can get behind or under left elbow but its hard to time & you are wide open for left hook.

Floyd seems to take bodyshots well, vs orthodox its all about the right hand

    :good

Yea man that was genius, Naseem comes from the same school of boxing (old school) as Floyd SR and Roger both, he knows what they know. Naseem knows how to beat Floyd JR, he just needs a fighter capable of applying his gameplan.

What makes you think Martinez has such a good ring IQ?

Feint the jab, wait for Floyd to stick the elbow out, throw straight right to the body.

    or..

Feint the jab, wait for Floyd to stick the elbow out, sidestep right, throw overhand right to the head.

    or..

Feint the jab, wait for Floyd to stick the elbow out, sidestep left, throw left hook to the liver.

You're not talking technique, you're just labeling fighters as smart or dumb. If Pac were all athletic ability he would have been stopped by now due to his mistakes. If Cotto never fought through adversity he would have never gotten up from the floor against Torres and walked down Mosley. If Martinez weren't smart, he would have been stopped with his hands-down approach; he's a threat at 154.

Ortiz was out of his depth, but he landed more significantly than Marquez. I would bet that Manny, Sergio, and Miguel all land more significant shots than Marquez did as well, because the size, athletic, age, and conditioning factors would be vastly different.

Another thing is Floyd will clinch or push off with his forearm so putting yourself within THAT range

a stupid idea too. Mid to long range combination punching is the way to go and just know a straight right lead is coming. Having him stuck on the ropes negates the power he puts in that counter as well so intelligent pressure is key.

Take away Floyd's right hand and he's pretty much finished. Defense or not.

    As I already mentioned.

Oscar's biggest issue there was that he was completely squared up throwing those punches. Had he moved his head a bit and presented angles the right hand would be much more difficult to time or land as clean.
