There are the people who have a very casual knowledge about boxing; they only know about the most popular of fighters, like Pacquiao and Mayweather, but not guys like Martinez and Donaire... There are the people who know about all the noteworthy fighters, even if they aren't mainstream popular, but they know nothing of the up and comers, or guys who just aren't well known... There are the people who have scientific level boxing knowledge; these guys can dissect fighter styles - the science of what goes on in a ring. They know everything about everything, from today to yesteryear... ...of course, there are many in between, but those are just a few examples...how would you describe yourself, AND BE HONEST! I'd describe myself...I'm simply ok at looking at what goes on in the ring on a scientific level...I definitely don't have it down like some guys, but I see boxing as a lot more than "two guys throwing punches at each other", unlike many casual boxing fans. I do know alot about boxing history, being that I was reading boxing book and studying the sport by the time I was 6...I know all about the current top fighters of course, whether they are mainstream popular of not, and even the lower level ones, but you will lose me if you start naming some obscure names...there are guys on Ring's rankings that I have no idea who they are, never seen them fight...
That's not saying much, unless your peers are a bunch of boxing journalists...I'm top amongst my peers too, but most of my peers have that "very casual" boxing knowledge thing going...
To be honest, i only bother to watch the top fighters fight, and the up and comers nowadays. Top as in top ten in every division But i spent hours on researching and watching old school fights, trying to learn about every great fighter that has existed.
i think im okay. i can look at a boxer and right away see the things he is doing wrong and how to correct them. i can also show them how to make them better fighters. after years of watching the sport, u pick up little things boxers do, learn from others, and incorporate it into your own boxing knowledge. i always study trainers like steward, atlas, roach, and listen to every word they say. it makes u appreciate the sport even more
I'm definitely more than a casual fan, but I don't put myself up there with Intentional Butt as far as knowledge of every boxer on the planet. I love Friday Night Fights to start off a weekend, and that's typically where I'll see a guy for the first time. Occassionally, I'll go to a live card (like Saturday's Super Six), but I have a lot of other interests. As far as scientifically breaking down a fight, I usually only do that the second or third time I watch the fight and only with fighters like JMM who are cerebral. I've sparred a little bit and did a couple of tourneys when I trained in Kenpo in my 20s, but don't consider myself to have boxing experience.
been my favorite sport for over 30 years. i think i have a better understanding of the science behind boxing than the average fan. its history, i would rate myself a 5 out of 10. knowledge of current fighters, again a 5. knowledge of boxers pre 70s, almost non existant compared to some of the encyclopedias on here. i would say im somewhere between a casual fan and a boxing nerd.
i'd say i have a historical knowledge of boxing, not truly in depth but im a big fan of Joe Louis, Stanley Ketchel and jack johnson. i know quite alot about domestic fighter (brits) and who are the upcomers mainly i pay alot of attention to the mega fights, the same as everyone else i guess but i do train myself and try to disect techniques and styles and tweak my own technique upon learning new things. overall im just an all rounder but no expert
I'd describe myself as being very educated in the sport of Boxing. I'm young so my boxing history isn't 'great' regarding older fighters, but I have studied many of them even as far as studying fighters that fought in 1910 like Johnson. As of today, I know pretty much every champion in every division, and the upcoming fighters. OK, i'll admit, I'm a fanatical fan of boxing!
