Frazier stayed on you, not giving you any room to counter or set your punches. If you throw a right hand, he'll counter with a hard left hook to the body and follow up immediately with another to the head. His left hook was his best punch, but he disguised it well. He'd double it up, throw it behind the jab, or use other combinations so you couldn't see it coming. Everytime you missed a punch, he'd counter with it. And the guy kept coming. He couldn't be discouraged. A real warrior. With his bobbing and weaving, he's hard to hit flush. He makes you miss and makes you pay. And his body punching would break you down eventually. If you were standing in the ring and Smokin' Joe Frazier was glaring at you from the opposite corner, what would your strategy be?
I think it totally depends on who is fighting him , their attributes , character and size would be important. If it were me i would call **** before the fight started and see if i could take a win in the court room.
The way Fritzie Zivic fought Henry Armstrong the first two times..Zivic said in an interview in an old boxing mag that his style was to retreat and box defensively..then stop and engage Henry in short, brief flurries...then retreat..box and move and then suddenly plant himself and fire short combos at him. of course in Zivics repetroire was an ample use of the dirty techniques in his bag or tricks. It goes without saying that you'd have to have a great deal of stamina to do this. You'd have to smartly play the 15 round distance along the way...and the key of course would be the ability to score effectively and with some pop, so as to get Joe's attention and respect, and even then there would be no real guarantee of success. The best antidote would be to have Foreman type power and in both cases, a really good beard. Frazier would, in most cases, be a nightmare if you didn't have much power & an average chin.
If I were to keep my current physical attributes (obviously increased to the world class level inwhich I'd be fighting Joe) I'd have no choice but to go toe to toe with him. He would promptly knock me out, and hopefully my paycheck would cover my hospital bills.
I met Joe at a party and I have to tell you although he was listed at 5"11 he looked more like 5"10 but his neck and head where think and his shoulders were wide. I met Ali,Holmes,Quarry, Cooney,Dempsey,Lyle,Walcott,Tunney,Patterson,Dokes,Page,Tyson, and many other Heavyweights and but I have to tell you...Frazier and and Walcott I would have to shoot and Tyson as well but Frazier and JJ Walcott were very imposing
jabs and lots of pivoting. To beat frazier you have to try to keep your body from being attacked as much as possible because thats's mainly how he took his foes apart. It would be a wise strategy to try to keep on the outside of him by side stepping , spinning and countering. It would still be tough though and you would need guts as well as a good fight plan.
