A little bit of an out there idea but hear me out. A professional league for older fighters, allowing them to make a bit of cash with less risk. In theory it would be open to professional fighters over the age of 45, all fighters would wear headgear, and fights would go 6 two minute rounds (with strict medical exams before and after). Also keep the Luis Ortiz jokes to a minimum.

I'd feel better about a mandatory retirement age.

I'd prefer that to putting them on someone's resume as a stepping stone.

I just wonder how much money would be in it to make it worth it

    Won't ever happen...

    a) In Western countries there would be a huge public backlash concerning the dangers faced by the older fighters
    b) In non-Western countries there would be no regulatory problems - just a complete lack of interest in watching washed-up fighters.

That would also be a good idea but not sure how a disorganized sport like boxing could implement an afe restriction when other centralized sports haven't (obviously those sports and as physically harmful). Also what would the age limit be as some fighters are still competitive into their 40's.

It's too brutal of a sport
Serious injuries would be rampant maybe even death.

I would like to see it. Maybe 5 rounders with big gloves.

Briggs and Tarver would be in it. I don't know who else. Maybe Guillermo Jones or Rahman.

Jones Jr. if he could be convinced. McCall's old ass needs in it. The only way it could hypothetically work would be to get big names in there with each other (maybe throw a card of it together around the hall of fame induction)

Clearly he should, but either because of money or a love of the sport he won't. That being the case I would rather see him compete in paid headgeared exhibitions with other fighters his age instead of taking the risk he is against active fighters.

They did it years back with some of the Holmes era guys. Nobody got hurt.

I have to agree with you.

I was being a bit sarcastic & guilty of wishful thinking when I posted my original comment. I agree that it would be very difficult to implement properly. For example, a 45 year-old HW can be pretty viable within reason. It would come down to judgement calls and since when has boxing ever been good at that? A very basic criteria could probably be established concerning age & number of knockout suffered, I suppose.

    I just reviewed boxrec.

Between 98 and 99 this happened:

    1. Bonecrusher Smith beat Bugner
    2. Page beat Witherspoon
    3. Holmes beat Bonecrusher
    4. Holmes beat Weaver

    The idea then died.

Great idea. I've been advocating for this for years. Other sports have it, why not boxing? It would provide an outlet for osme of these older fighters to make money, yet it wouldn't be as risky as having them fight up and comers as record padders. The matches would be more competitive and entertaining.

Agreed 100%, I've been on board with this idea as well.

Setting up a seniors tour is the best way to protect the old lions from being step up fodder while still being able to make some cash off their skills and name.

It's safer and more dignified than the current system IMO.
