Rios' defense is highly underrated by some but not by the people he has fought. His defense is subtle but it has taken him through over 300 amatuer bouts and he is 30 - 0 as a pro without ever being stopped or seriously hurt in the ring. That says quite a bit.

Me personally, I would rate it as sub par....He tends to cover up pretty well, but thats about it...He has no headmovement, he tends to just stand there often without trying to evade or move out of the way at times.

I think his defense is ok, just nothing special! Against some fighters it gets the job done...but against boxers who give him movement, its gonna be his downfall.

He gets hit with a good amount of punches, but his defense isn't nonexistent. He slips and rolls well with the punches on the inside and rarely gets hit flush, and his guard is usually pretty tight. It's just like he said in an interview, "If my defense is so bad, how come my face isn't all marked up after?" Defense has many functional dimensions and doesn't require a clean, slick aesthetic to work.

I have questions for those that say Rios has NO defense. How does a fighter with NO defense become a 30 - 0 pro? How does a fighter with NO defense become a 30 - 0 pro who has never been stopped or seriously hurt in the ring? Never stopped or hurt in over 300 amateur fights. How does that happen?

Yory Boy Campas went 45-0 as a pro. That just about ends your arguement.

Oh and btw....... Rios has been down from body shots early in his career genius.

Becoz he holds a functional 10-15 lb advantage over the lil no hopers he does fight.
Once this Foo moves up to 140 he's gonna get his ass handed to him.

I'd refuse to train the kid!

He'll get KO'd the first time he fights a Boxer puncher with good power. (I said this before the Abril fight and everyone called me stupid...)

His defense is below average (correction not below average as todays fighters dont rate defense as highly as fighters in the past more like below par), as soon as he starts fighter more elite fighters we will find that out.

Its not like he has absolutely no defense but it really isn't good, he doesnt move his head or upper body enough and he gets hit plenty.

Believe me if he fights Pacquiao or even Gamboa he is going to wish he learned some defense properly!
