Recently started watching some of Jimmy Ellis's fights and I think he was a terrific fighter. I know he was beaten by some greats, but he had some good wins, too. I liked how he handled Bonavena, Quarry and Martin, for instance. I wondered how Ellis might have done in Marciano's era fighting Moore, Charles and Walcott. Any views on this or Jimmy in general?

Well he's gone from MW to HW to take the sport's biggest prize after a tough start in the MW division when he lost against a series of top contenders. He moved to HW as the small guy and beat former champ Patterson, Quarry, Bonavena and Martin. It really is a Cinderella story, but people have forgot Ellis now after he came up short against the very best HWs of his era. What he achieved as a naturally smalled man is probably superior and harder to what Foster managed at LHW.
I think he gets overrated p4p and underrated at heavyweight, weirdly, but i'm prepared to learn more about what he did to get up in weight.
He was taller than all of these and heavier than all but Oscar. However I think he is very underrated, Quarry, Patterson and even Bonavena are often rated above him-I suppose his peak run was short. A lot of people expected him to beat Frazier.
I think Ellis was very good. He was quick and could hit. Commentators at the time said he tended to fade in fights. Frazier would have beaten most heavies with the power he showed against Jimmy. Really enjoying watching some of his work.
Ellis was spectacular in destroying Johnny Persol....after all that sparring with Ali,he just couldn't miss Persol, lol. Ellis boxed beautifully and with power vs Bonavena...even more impressive in this victory, with thise kd's than was Ali vs Oscar,..he boxed a more conservative style vs a young, fast and dangerous Jerry Quarry (young Quarry was deadlier than the later, more mature version) but that was about it really. I'll always think that Patterson deserved the win in Stockholm in '68, and Jimmy was totally in adequate vs the pressure and power of Joe Frazier. Jimmy came into his own at a reasonably good time and was fortunate for that reason....though in truth it should have been Floyd Patterson regaining the title for the third time.
I've watched that fight many times, I was and am a Patterson fan, but the best I can give Floyd is a draw. He looked the better fighter, had a few dominating rounds but kept going into a shell I'd be shouting at the screen, "do something!" Ellis keps sneaking rounds with his workrate, I know it's commonly considered a robbery but didn't look that way to me.
Ive got a love hate relationship with Ellis. He was better than I typically give him credit for. He was fast, a very good boxer, and had a very sneaky powerful right hand. On the flip side I think he got a gift decision over Patterson, got lucky that Quarry showed up to their fight injured and fought the stupidest fight he could have, and he extended his reign by blatantly ducking Frazier. That being said he legitimately beat Bonavena (who I would favor over him 9 out of 10 times) and Leotis Martin (which is a 50/50 match to me). Oddly enough its some of his performances when he was shot that give me more respect for him: He beat Chuvalo's ass royally. Chuvalo is supposed to be this tough guy bruiser and Ellis really took him to the woodshed. In the last round Ellis was bullying Chuvalo and at the finaly bell had him in order covering up like he was getting whipping from his daddy. Going the distance against Lyle and dropping Boone Kirkman when merely a shadow of his former self says a lot to me as well. People also forget that he split amateur fights with Ali and even dropped him a couple of times.
Funny but Jimmy started out as a middleweight and was beaten by Hurricane Carter and Benton I believe, I think he had 4 loses as a middleweight but he developed nice as a light heavy then Heavyweight. I remember his win over Oscar B. and he hurt Shavers in the 1st before walking into a bomb, i had ringside and Jimmy was past his best. Unfortunately like Quarry he shared an era with Frazier and Ali but he was a fine fighter
Very cute style, he was like patterson too big for the lhw division and too small for a hw, he would have been a great cruiser, he was much better than leon spinks, i pick jimmy ellis to beat qawi at cruiser.
In short, he went thru Martin-Bonavena-Quarry(tho boring, both were to blame for that snoozefest) and Floyd (despite the controversy). Yeah, he basically took 69 off (the Cooper defense went south) but showed the heart of a champ against Joe in early 70. Fine boxer puncher, early starter with a sneaky powerful right hand, and a fairly good set of whiskers (Frazier). Simply a bad era to be in but IMO would have been a pretty good contending force in ANY era.
