Funny how he and Muhammad Ali attended the same high school in louisville and not too far apart. Both were olympians and both heavyweight champions. Must have been something in the drinking fountains at school. lol... Ellis was a super achiever by all standards. He started off the hard way by facing seasoned opponents with very few bouts under his belt and while being in his early 20's. His ascent in weight to beat top contenders in a very strong heavyweight era is worthy of respect. There are some periods in heavyweight boxing where he might have captured lineage and stayed there for a while, but my thinking is that due to his size limitations he'd have to go back in time, not forward to do it.

It would have been interesting to see him against Corbett, Fitz, and Jeffries and I think he would have decisioned all of them. Jack, Tunney, Johnson and Louis I think would have been in another league above him but he may have done well with Sharkey and the lot. I learned the lead right hand watching Jimmy doing it so well.

I agree that Tunney would have beaten Ellis.

why? don´t you think that genne tuney was a bit overrated? yes, he was a cientific man for his era, but maybe in the era of ellis he would have been more average in his own style, and he was a natural 175 pounder in his prime, ellis was in his prime a 190 pounder

Ellis wasnt an Olympian. He was eliminated in the Olympic trials by Skeeter McClure who won the Olympic gold medal.

Good research! I wonder what happened to McClure, I've seen his name on occasion over the years.

Tunney, as proven by history, wasn't overrated at all. He would have cleanly decisioned Ellis.

Hahaha, well Frank does know boxing well but some of us, me included, can't understand much of what he is saying which sometimes is a shame.

"Let us not get carried away"

BTW, I think Ellis vs Tunney could have gone Ellis' way, but Ellis never fought anyone like Qawi and I wonder if he could land enough on him.
I think Ellis could give Michael Spinks more problems than to Qawi, but I might be wrong about it.

And yes, Tunney is extremely overrated:
Hiding behind the color line, benefiting off the long count, fighting smaller men usually and did he ever fight any notable lefty?
Regarding size, Tunney was at least on Ellis' size.

Tunney was probably a better 175 than Ellis was at 160, this is the only way I can have him win a comparison with Ellis.

I rank Ellis over Tunney P4P, HW and based on interpolation also at LHW.
Only at 175 I can bare ranking Tunney over Ellis. Barely.

Harry Gibbs refereed him against Leweni Waqa in1966 at the Arsenal Stadium he took Waqa out in a round. Gibbs said he looked better than Ali did against Cooper that night.

based on nothing, he was a great lhw, apart of beating a shot dempsey( and he was put down for the count, it was a long count), he never proved being great above 175

Other than the fact that you are rapidly proving yourself a troll I dont know why this tripe gets stated sometimes. As if Tunney had only two fights at HW...

Gene Tunney beat HWs: Jack Burke, Ray Smith, Charlie Weinert, Johnny Risko, Tom Heeney, Martin Burke, Harry Foley, Erminio Spalla, Bartley Madden, Italian Jack Herman, all in addition to Dempsey. Risko and Heeney remained contenders for years after Tuney beat them. In fact Id have to go and compare but Id guess he fought as many HW fights as he did LHW.
