When Roy uses his jab ala Pazienza and more recently Trinidad, its a beauty. He even knocked down Trinidad with it, albeit more because of the timing than the power. Compared to the great jabbers like Hearns and Holmes, how would you rate it, in terms of speed, power, accuracy, etc?
Hard to rate personally, because the only time he really used it to great effect was in the Ruiz fight That night though, it was beautiful, crisp, sharp and lazer accurate
He used it against Hopkins too I think and it was effective, as far as how it rates with the atg's im not sure, he does have a great jab though when he uses it.
I consider his jab better now than it was in his pomp. I think he's a better technical fighter all round. Basically, Roy never utilised his jab to it's full potentiol - arguably it's not a punch you need when you are so far ahead of the competition you can consistantly land a lead left-hook. Now that speed has betrayed him, he needs that jab and it looks lke a good one to me.
Roy Jones had one of the most under utilized jabs of any of the ATGs particularly because his jab was top notch. He didnt use it much but from what I've see it was clearly a tier 1 jab.
Hard to say. He doesn't throw it much. Now his left hook is one of the best for sure. I have only seen Jones and Mayweather to be able to land lead left hooks consistently.
Roy Jones was so damn good, he didn't even need a jab. Who else can you say that about? Amazing.. On a 1-10 scale, I would rate the jab of the Ruiz fight a 9.
I immediately thought of the Pazienza fight when I read the title to this thread. I remember watching that fight, and he used the jab beautifully that night. It was quick, sharp, and powerful.
The only fight I've seen him jab consistently is the Ruiz fight, so it's hard to rate it on that performance alone. It was very good that night though.
To be honest, it is pretty weak, when comparing him to other LHW greats. RJJ's jab was one of his Achilles' heels (that and his chin of course). I remember him trying to jab with Griffin in their first fight, and being outboxed because of it.
I think Jones can still be an effective fighter despite his age if he uses that peek-a-boo style utilizing the jab like he did against Trinidad. Becoming more conventional would not make his hands any slower and would put less of a need to rely on reflexes to defend himself.
