... there was only one belt per weight class? So, Roy Jones moved up to Heavy for one fight against a middle of the road top 10 contender heavyweight in John Ruiz and won as he did. Manny Pacquiao fought number 3 ranked lightweight in Diaz and number 2 and 5 ranked welters in Cotto and Clottey and didn't win a belt. Floyd Mayweather, fought the number 2 ranked light middle in Oscar, a few top ten ranked Welters (I know Baldomir was Lineal but he probably wouldn't have been) There are a lots of other examples of the alphabet belts being kind to peoples legacy but I see people mentioning the above as potential GOAT.
They all would have been great regardless, but they all would have suffered from one belt per weight class, because they all "picked" opponents.Mayweather is undefeated and has fought a lot of undefeated opponents and trashed them, such as Diego Corrales which in my opinion is his greatest performance.Hatton was also undefeated when he met a check hook then a turn buckle then the mat.Roy would be remembered for his ability to defy the rule and logic of the sport regardless of anything.Pacquiao would be remembered for the wars he was willing to fight and for his balls to the wall style of fighting. So I guess Floyd would have the most to gain if there was only one belt per division seeing as his opponents would have been more clear cut and he would have had to take a route that no one could poo-poo on.There careers all rate highly,so I guess this is more about the desire for there to be one belt more than anything.I wish there was one belt. There would be less room to argue.Who respects this new "silver" belt.:huh
