His quality of opposition was much higher, and he's a slow starter - most of those knockdowns came in early rounds. Also notable that most of the people that dropped him, he came back to dominate and knock them out.
Vitali is in a whole nother league than Wlad when it comes to toughness and chin. I never seen Wlad panic like a little girl at the hands of Sam Peter, or melt like an icecream cone on a summer day when Sanders landed his money shot. As far as him getting up. Well half the time the punches weren't powerful enough to put a world class heavyweight on his ass anyway. So I really dont give Wlad much credit for that. The guy is 6'6 and half 240-245, and he has been shown to be afraid to go punch for punch with guys nearly 6 inches shorter, with less power than him. The Iggy fight was a god damn joke, I was so happy when the american crowd boo'd him out of the arena.
Again that has nothing to do with the comment of "the knockdowns speak for themselves" Knockdowns should be viewed individually on a case by case scenario.
Wlad gets a lot of critisism on his chin. Although he does not have his brothers granite chin it is not that bad. I keep hearing about the Sanders fight. Well name the fighters in the top ten that wouldn´t have been knocked out by Sanders punch. OK we his brother took it but he also expected it coming into their fight. Not many outside Vitali could. I suspect most would not even have made the 10 count that Wladimar did make. His glass like jaw reputation is not deserved. Theon
He's a saftey first boxer/puncher. There is a reason why he won't allow opponents to touch him. Did you see the Chagaev fight? Everytime Chagaev came close to within punching range, Wladimir would immediately hold. He is 240lbs of muscle though.
I thought I would read a bunch Of KBros craziness on this thread. Like Sanders is one of the hardest punchers of all time. But for the most part the responses were quite measured I would say his chin is a notch below average, not quite weak, just a little below average. however, he is a better all around fighter than big bros and therefore the best of this era.
Just because it was a left, doesn't mean it was a jab. He actually was chasing Wlad and changing his stance for that punch, so it was more of a straight left.
It's glass. Not Davaryll Williamson or Jeremy Williams glass, but still prety damn weak. Probably the only reason he doesn't get knocked cold as often as those guys is because he's an enormous man who can take slightly more punishment than other smaller, weak-chinned heavyweights.
..........haye has had his chance to fight wlad............he did not and i suspect he will run from wlad as long as possible.....
I'd say 4-5, weak to average. A notch weaker than Lennox Lewis chin. To be fair Wlad has only been knocked out/down by big punchers. Brewster, Sanders, Peters, all hard punchers. Touch of sleep can crack with his right hand too. His chin certainly isn't good tho, or he could've taken at least some of these punches.
I'd say it's average, taking into account the whole spectrum of fighters but taking under account just world champions, it's below average. Fighters rarely hold onto a title like this with unreliable whiskers. It's pretty impressive. I think the fear of his chin giving out on him is the biggest reason he's still around on the world stage. It makes him fight much smarter. Not exciting, but very smart and impressive.
