Yes friend. Exactly. And never forget, Cooney had lost (cosell loved him) and Leonard had retired. He had no lose relationships with others. Cosell hated Hagler and his buds were gone. Ironically he quit in the middle of the greatest 30 days in boxing history for me. Nov 12-Dec 11. Hamsho kicks silverspoon czyz ass. Holmes wins big. And of course ta daaaaaaaaa PryorArguello ManciniKim .GOMEZPINTOR and the coup de grau BAZOOKASCHOOLBOY 4. **** Cosell the drama queen. Though he made the fights bigger and more exciting.
I despised Cosell. I thought he was an arrogant, overrated windbag. Larry and Tex will always be 2 of my favorites and if I ever meet either or both, I will buy them drinks and personally thank them for their parts in ridding boxing of that clown Cosell. Cosell attached himself to 2 of the most popular, charismatic and best boxers ever, who made him in this sport. And once they retired, he had nowhere to go. Bye-bye
Cosell was becoming disenchanted withe the sport for at least a couple of years before Holmes-Cobb, so he was likely to step aside at some point. Some of his calls were iconic, but I wouldn't even consider him to be the best boxing announcer on his own network during the 70's and early 80's. For my money, Keith Jackson called the fights on his own just as well, if not better, than Cosell- and was a whole lot less abrasive in doing so.
I agree Red, not sure of the particulars of his exit after Larry-Tex but...I too was a huge fan; from the mid-60'-late 70's he WAS 'the voice'. Despite his other endeavors (his halftime NFL highlights were a hoot!! "Chuck Foreman, takes the handoff, looks left, cuts to the right, he's got room and WE'VE SEEN THIS BEFORE!) His boxing commentary was no less exciting. I truly believe he WAS a true boxing fan! His various snippets: "a bloody pulpy mess", "down goes Fraza!", etc. are immortal. Just thinking out loud for the moment.
All the TV Networks had their own "style". Don Dunphy Friday Night fights....then Cosell (Ali) and Olympics/W. World of Sports, then CBS Sports Spectacular, and NBC Sports World. HomeTV stuff. People forget there was a period of time when Home TV boxing shows were few and far between in the 60's. I even liked that Gillette razor "Parrot" that popped up on Friday Night Fights telling you what round it was.
The very best I think was Ryan. Although I really thought Quarry was great with Tom Brookshire. A great team. Barry Thompkons rules also.
I don't think it was sincere no. He knew heavyweight boxing was on the downside and Ali was retired for a year at that point ( which was what he was around for), and he was getting older and didn't want to report on it anymore, and he used the fight to say this was the reason. If he didn't love boxing before, he really short changed the fans.
Howard wanted that referee to get the electric chair or so it seemed. "Doesn't that man know he's contructing an advertisement for the abolition of boxing?"
Not me Roy Jones has the best eyes I have ever seen in commentary and calling a fight. Kellerman is annoying but very knowledgable about the history of the sport. Lampley is a solid pro. Cosell was a big event guy but if you listen to his calling of a fight how much he missed as he went on and on is embarrassing. It's nice to watch a fight and actually learn a thing or two which tends to happen when a Jones is involved.
