Some opponents fight better when hurt like a wounded animal, nigel benn fought well hurt, and so you must give them a chance, it only takes a punch to swing the fight completely around. Andy lee was getting a good beating before he pulled off a great right hook, gets the victory but if it was on british soil and it was a british fighter doing the damage, the ref would of waved it off.

The issue with Periban, is that he wasn't given any chance by Foster. He was protecting himself up to the knock down punch, and then after that he was just given no chance to recover. If at all possible, fighters should be given the full count, or mandatory 8 count anyway, and then assessed *after that* time. For me this was crystal clear incompetence on the part of Foster because he just jumped in to stop it immediately without real cause.

You don't need to be able to "protect yourself" for the first few seconds when you go down, because the fight is temporarily halted at that stage! So your objection here looks utterly fallacious to me.

In general, the ref is certainly there to protect the fighters if they are genuinely incapable of defending themselves. But that isn't what we see in a British ring. For example, look at Foster's stoppage in Thaxton vs John Murray. Was Thaxton incapable of defending himself when he got stopped? Not at all. He wasn't even really hurt! He just got stopped because Murray was landing a few good shots that were having an impact.

Refs aren't there to be that "protective" mate. It's supposed to be a f**king combat sport!

Howard Foster needs to be either retrained or kicked out of the sport.

The damage done to boxing by early stoppages shouldn't be taken lightly either. It not only kills the sport, but it makes British refs look corrupt like they are using it to favour the home fighters.

Refs are there to stop fighters taking too much damage, not to stop fighters from being Knocked Out

Foster has a tendency now to stop fighters after they only take a copuple of flush shots without even giving them the chance to take a knee, beat a count, recover

I would rather that refs learned to stop fights at the correct point rather than using this old line.

And there is no way to know when a fight will end with someone being killed or permanently harmed. It can happen in fights when no one would think that they should have been stopped. Or alternatively, even stopping a fight properly late doesn't normally get anyone killed. You may increase the risk of harm sure.

If you ask a coach "do you think that British refs have got the balance right, or are they stopping a lot of fights too soon", you can hardly just assume that they would all be happy with the situation today.

Didn't like it at the time but in hindsight i think it was a good stoppage, Periban certainly wasn't complaining. He was taking a hideous beating

I would be interested to see what your response would have been if the ref has waved Ricky outa there after the knockdown the broke his jaw.

He had gone down and had got up. HE should have been given a count. The ref is there to jump in quickly if he does not defend himself however he has to be given that opportunity.

Howard Foster has proved time and again he can't get it right in big fights.

Terry o'connor is a disgrace to boxing. Sad to see see someone that boxed dragging the sport down the way he is.

Reffing is a hard job no doubt and their will always be people that want to have a pop.

IJL's stoppage of Enzo against Ovil was terrible but I could almost immediately forgive him as you could see that he knew he made a terrible error. Nothing of the kind from O'connor. Disgrace, he shouldn't even be allowed in to venues nevermind officiating.
