Howard posted on this forum for many years as Scrap. I met Scrap elsewhere online in 05 and i was blessed to talk boxing with him via various forums and personal messages for many years. In late 06 I encountered some health issues and,as a result of prolonged illness, lost my home, my business and everything else. Over the time that it took to get back on my feet, Howard regularly offered to send me money. I always declined because I didn't know when, or if, I would be able to pay it back. Howard always said that it didn't matter- it was worth it to keep a teacher in boxing. When you look at what the man accomplished in the activity we all love, you can understand how much those words have meant to me. For awhile there was a thriving discussion here on the training board and that died. It was killed off by a particular punk little ***** that saw fit to ridicule a man that he was not equal to and to reveal information about Howard's personal life and his work away from boxing and to ridicule it. If the former Tai Chi still posts here and, if you have the balls, pm me your name and location and I will be there within a day and we can tactfully discuss your lack of dignity. God bless a good, valuable man, and may he rest in peace. British boxing legend, Howard Rainey, dies aged 79 (thestar.co.uk)
I didn’t know Scrap and not sure I ever interacted with him, but what a sweet tribute @greynotsoold. The boxing world is surely poorer for him no longer being part of it. RIP.
Thanks for this grey, it was touching to read and good to see Howard being acknowledged. Sounds like you knew him well. I'm not far from Sheffield and have a decent idea what a good man he was and how much he gave to both the city and the sport in general in the sort of quiet, industrious way in the background that usually goes unappreciated. The area probably owes him a similar debt as to Brendan Ingle tbh despite Brendan being more recognisable and acclaimed. He was a really good trainer and a bit of a maverick. Rarely took much money from his fighters and was generous with his free time, which resulted in him being far less well off in his old age than he might have been (and makes his offer to you even more admirable). You probably already know, seeing how you knew him , but he was in a bad way these last couple of years with heart trouble and dementia. Required constant care as I understand it. There's a fundraiser for his funeral iirc, I might have to send a few pounds in it's general direction. I think the procession is going down Bramall Lane too so might call by to pay my respects if I get time. Sorry to hear of your struggles too, I know first hand how poor health (physical and mental) can set a person back financially. RIP Howard.
I remember well the Name and seem to remember him as a reputable Boxing person, beyond that, I don't remember if I ever had any back & forths with him, beyon d the normal 'likes; and Post responses... Rest in GOD's good Grace, Sir. Amen.
I did not know Mr. Rainey and I do not remember ever interacting with him. That was a wonderful tribute, to an obviously great boxing legend! May he rest in peace, and my condolences to his family and friends! And I sincerely hope you are solidly back on your feet and not further troubled by health issues.
If this goes any further I’d like it to be BF24s first PPV. Rest easy Howard the hard parts over - God Bless.
R I P Howard I never had the pleasure of meeting him but heard a lot about him . He was well respected in boxing circles
A little bit more about Howard... By 07 I was living in Montana- I had a house in California that I had sold but hadn't been paid for. I carried the note and I guess he thought that I was going to die so he quit paying so I foreclosed and bought a small home up here. Towards the end of the year Howard was taking a fighter or fighters to spar with a very well known HW in Dallas- this guy is almost always in at least a couple threads on the first page of this forum. This fighter had been posting on the site where I initially got to talk boxing with Howard, but under a username. Howard was encouraging me to come to Dallas- which I was unable to do- but never told me who the fighter was until some time later. When he told me who it was he said it was a shame because the guy really wanted to meet me. When, because of this site, I got the opportunity to go to Oklahoma City, I think that he was more excited than I was. When you have spent so long doing something, then think it is done, that you are finished and, all of a sudden, you are in the gym twice a day with a guy ranked just outside the top 10, and every evening you are messaging and talking boxing with Howard, and guys in the Errol Spence camp, and HoF guys from TR, it is surreal. There is a pretty big comeback in line for this year, an opportunity to work with another young fighter just outside of the top 10, that will probably play out with GBP. That came to me because of Dempsey1234 and people he introduced me to years ago....
