This one's for a big fan of Saldivar that frequents these boards. There's literally only one of you, so you know who you are. Enjoy.

Cheers dude! I'm a big admirer of them both, Winstone was a lovely pure boxer when he focused on it, though he often fought like a textbook boxer-puncher despite his lack of power. I had a scorecard somewhere for this fight and the second one too I think, a few years back. IIRC I had Saldivar winning by three or four points, he started slowly as he sometimes did with Howard's jab and mobility building an early lead, but he really ran over Winstone late on as he went through the gears into Tazmanian devil in the championship rounds. His straight left really was an incredibly accurate and debilitating shot and a great punch against boxer-movers. His right to the body slowed Winstone down too in the mid rounds and set up his late cavalry charge.

It was the second fight though as I remember where he really beat Winstone up late on and left him not quite the same fighter afterwards, again after being outmanoevred early on. There have just been so few fighters at the weight so able to impose their will on opponents as Vicente did. Marciano-esque in the way he could slowly sweep people with his strength and accuracy, though big punchers could dent him tbh.

Have you ever seen the complete broadcast before/do you think you'll give the fight a fresh look?

I haven't had chance to look at it and don't expect I will, at least not all if it. I'm curious to see if Woller is right though and that it's the second fight, not the first.

I think it was the original complete British broadcast that I saw a few years back at an old fellow boxing fan's house. I've seen a version on YouTube too which I don't think was complete iirc. My memory is terrible though.

Yeah, I'm not, fair call. I didn't know you were a fan, klomp?

I've been meaning to ask you actually, not at all related to the thread. I got a chance quite a while back to see what I think was the third fight between Ortiz and Loi. That is, I think it was the third, one of the ones that took place in Italy anyhow that Ortiz narrowly lost. I thought he won handily tbh and was surprised because it contradicted what I've read. I recall you once saying that you'd seen both fights (I think it wasyl you), and was wondering if you had and if so what you thought?

I upload so many fights I sadly make this kind of mistake now and again. Sigh. My bad everyone, correcting title now.

A classic boxer vs puncher...this fight reminded me in a way of Marciano-LaStarza.
