Hrgovic is better than Itauma and deserved to win. Give him his credit

Kabayel, but he's not typically very ambitious.

    Gassiev has limitations.

    Dubois has already beaten him.

Wardley would be an interesting bout, but he still has a lot to prove too.

Parker would probably be the biggest name he could fight, and bigger than the actual beltholders, but Hrgovic wouldn't stand any chance of knocking him out and even less chance of winning a decision against him - even full-****** Parker would get a UD.

Usyk, Fury, AJ, Wilder are big names, but all basically finished.

Hrgovic is more experienced and tougher than Itauma and has much better stamina, but just as I don't think Karl Thompson is better than David Haye or Corrie Sanders is better than Wlad, I don't think Hrgovic is better than Itauma. I give Filip credit because I do like him, especially as a character outside the ring; his chin is also complete granite. It's right there alongside Chuvalo & Oliver McCall as far as I'm concerned, but in terms of being a better overall boxer, I don't see it. It was just too much too soon for Itauma; in most departments, he was head and shoulders above Hrgovic. He admitted it himself after the fight.

    Hrgovic is a world champion

    Olympic bronze medalist

    European gold medalist

    World Youth gold medalist

He would be a 2 x world champion or a unified one with a victory over the current #2 HW in the world if everything was on the level

He lost that fight to Dubois on cuts after being billy goat butted like 25 times

The fight should've gone to the judge's scorecards. The other day Google AI told me they were level now they're telling me Hrgovic was ahead but either way Hrgovic should've been declared the winner because the ref categorically should at the very least have deducted points from Dubois for butting the crap out of Hrgovic's visage all night

Hrgovic got screwed over and robbed of that win and being elevated to full champion due to corruption

If Hrgovic had butted Dubois 25 times he would've been DQ'd or had multiple points deducted and the fight would've gone to the cards and Dubois been declared the winner

Do you think the ref would've waved Dubois vs Lerena off at the bell in Lerena's favour after he dropped and hurt Dubois if Lerena had been the one who touched down x 3 in round 1 or do you think he would've allowed Dubois to go back to his corner to recover during the interval?

Do you think round 1 would've ended 9 seconds early if Lerena had touched down x 3 and was in big trouble?

Do you think Hrgovic would've had to wait 9 years for his first world title fight if he was British and one of Big Frank's or E-Hearn's favourites?

Moses had to wait 3.5 years for his world title shot

How long do you think he'll have to wait for his second one?

Dubois had to wait 5 years for his first one (WBA reg) and 6 for his second one at all Usyk's belts

Dubois has received 4 world title shots in his 9 year career (including the WBA reg) and been elevated to full champ after butting the crap out of Hrgovic

    Hrgovic has received 1

Moses had 7 senior amateur bouts

    Dubois 7

ie. they did nothing at the senior level

Hrgovic is an Olympic bronze medalist and European gold medalist as a senior and he achieved that coming from Croatia a country with no real boxing infrastructure, scene or history and no decent sparring for him. He had to travel to foreign countries out of his own pocket just to get some decent sparring

The had to go up and down the IBF ranking TWICE just to find someone willing to fight this gatekeeper for a guaranteed world title shot for the winner ie. the golden ticket.

'“It’s probably the most frustrating thing going, because we’ve been going down the IBF [rankings], probably every day, trying to find someone willing to step in the ring with Filip Hrgovic,” Hearn said. “The latest one was Martin Bakole. Billy Nelson (trainer of Bakole) said we wouldn’t be ready for August but would be ready for September, we said okay, a bit disappointing but let’s go ahead, and now I’m being told he wants a warm-up fight. “Someone in that top 15 has got a chance to fight Filip Hrgovic in a final eliminator for Anthony Joshua. And we have gone through – and I don’t want to shame everybody – we have gone through the whole rankings and we’ve yet to find one person who will do it. We need to make a fight for Filip Hrgovic, because he’s waited too long now. I think people look at Hrgovic and they think, ‘I don’t think I can beat Filip Hrgovic.’ You look at the names, Charles Martin, Andy Ruiz, Luis Ortiz, Tony Yoka, just so many fighters who, if they win, you are mandatory to AJ! But I guess that shows you how much of a problem Filip Hrgovic is for people.”

Speaking with Sky Sports, Kalle Sauerland, who represents Hrgovic, said “the rankings become a mockery” when fighters continually choose to avoid other top contenders. The case of Filip Hrgovic really is something else, however. Just what is it that seemingly all the top contenders that are offered the fight see that is so frightening? Is Hrgovic really that good? We know the tall, powerful Croatian has a superb amateur background and he has undeniable skills. Yet you would think all concerned would be able to find ONE top-ranked heavyweight willing to face him. So far, not so.

You'd think all these top HWs and top 15 ranked HWs would jump at the opportunity to fight a gatekeeper with the prize being a guaranteed world title shot

Hrgovic has had to do everything the hard way since day one despite being an elite decorated amateur who was probably the most highly regarded HW in the world when he turned pro and considered the one to keep an eye on. I say probably but I'm sure he was because gold medalist Yoka clearly lost to Hrgovic in the semi-final and many feel he lost to Big Joe Joyce in the final too.

Someone on here posted the fix was in for Yoka to win gold days or weeks before thee semi-final and many of us knew that Yoka was chinny and not cut out for the pros like the iron-jawed Hrgovic was

Hrgovic only has 1 loss and that's due to corruption and he didn't have the luxury of having a silver spoon like Moses and Dubois and some others and if he did his career and accomplishments would look a lot different

the thing i love about this post is that frank warren and queensberry really hoodwinked themselves with the hrgovic/itauma fight, and how it ended up becoming a world title fight...
after following hrgovic's career for 11 years, i love it..
    finally he's a world champion
coming from little, tiny croatia (population 3.9 million), he gave croatians something to smile about..
i just hope that he can get big fights from here on..

Moses was a terrible stylistic match up for Hrgovic to look good against all the things he does well align perfectly with all the things Hrgovic doesn't do well

Why the hell do you think they took the fight and were willing to take that risk?

And once again people are blinded and giddy by speed and athleticism. But If Moses just did this or didn't do this he would've won the fight easy

That's a different fight. If Moses does less, Hrgovic does more

If Moses doesn't handcuff him with his speed, power and output for much of the first half of the fight and doesn't load up to hit as hard as h did as much and throw as much as he did, Hrgovic isn't handcufffed and he can apply more pressure and land with more of his own shots which will also wear on Moses or and potentially hurt him or knock him out

On the other hand, I've never seen so much mental gymnastics around a fight to make it seem like.it was a good performance by Hrgovic. The most obvious conclusion is there but some of you don't want to see that.

Moses didn't have an answer when Hrgovic said things were much more difficult for him coming from a small country like Croatia and much easier for Moses coming from Britain. That's not a knock on Moses it's just true and everyone watching that face to face knew it was true or were like hmm.. Hrgovic has a point there after giving it a few seconds thought.

Hrgovic is a great character: Charismatic, stoic, funny, and very matter of fact and he was so humble and refreshingly honest in his post-fight interviews and its great to see him finally achieve his dream having had to do everything the hard way

Okay, but let's put the pieces together...

Hrgovic is well known for poor stamina.
Itauma came up a long way short on stamina.

    Ergo.
A significant improvement might still leave Itauma lacking, just less lacking than right now.

Absolutely, and if the noises about chasing unifications are true, he's got more of a champions mentality than many who get to wear belts.

But I can't rate the guy just because he seems likeable and honourable.

It was a good performance. Enduring punishment, being down on the Score cards and then stopping your opponent leaving him bent over with his head slumped in the corner carried out on a stretcher is tremendous. You only mention the first 8 rounds, which he lost a couple at least by the way. You conveniently leave out the party where he got destroyed hit 28 times in less than a round and couldn't walk. In marathon terms he led 2 3rds of the way in but got annilahilted failing to complete the final 3rd. Not only failing to complete it, but was so far behind he would have got destroyed if he did. But he didn't. He couldn't keep up and was made to quit.

His body, his mind, his insides got destroyed. He didn't quit. He got flogged.

    absolutely!!!!
especially in light of all the pre fight talk and predictions
when i went on a few youtube sites that were previewing the fight, and gave my thoughts on the fight,
saying that hrgovic is going to send itauma to a deep dark place, a place he's never been to, then getting peoples reactions like ''you've got to be joking'' and so on...
to me, it was a no brainer that hrgovic would win..
when i saw him arrive in london during fight week, it said everything to me, his demeanor, confidence, being happy, relaxed and zoned in..
i love seeing the egg on people's faces after the fight..
pre-fight...moses smashes him, knocks him out
post-fight...where did it all go wrong and so on..
it made me sick seeing teddy atlas' post fight review of the fight, and only giving hrgovic credit at how he handled himself at the weigh in
i hope hrgovic has a few more fights, big fights too, with big paydays then calls it a day..
i hope that he can get a lot more recognition and respect while fighting, rather than having history being kinder to him

I know, the ref should have given him a timeout! Honestly, it was basically a robbery.

I can think of a few that run it pretty close...

Wilder fans after Fury dominated the bronze fraud in their first bout, for example, were massively overrating Wilders performance and ignoring Fury's awful condition and the fact he'd still clearly won - and then Bakole getting hyped to the moon for beating bang-average Anderson in a similar gatekeeper beats hyped prospect bout as another example.

Ultimately, when hype horses are at full gallop, very very few riders even try to gracefully dismount... Most carry on riding that train and insisting their boy really is that good but this other guy is absolutely ridiculous... Doesn't stand up to scrutiny more often than not, but it's psychologically easier than admitting you got emotionally invested in the success of someone who didn't deserve it.

Yeah they gave him no chance, no chance of even making it past round 3 according to many

Lost count of thee amount of comments I saw on social media from people who were so sure, cocky even, it would all be over between 1-3

I didn't watch Teddy Atlas' review of it but I've watched many others and the Hrgovic disrespect is disgusting. Barely mentioning anything positive about him or if so only very briefly before they get back to gushing about Moses and making excuses for him and blaming Davison

As said, I like Moses but this mass outpouring for him and excuse machine is insane. The only other fighter I can think of who we've seen something even remotely comparable to this in terms of scale is AJ after he lost to Usyk and that probably wasn't even close. Hrgovic won the fight, if Hrgovic had lost in the exact same fashion there would be no outpouring just like there wasn't after he gassed vs Dubois and was robbed of victory by corruption after being billy goat butted a million times
