If you are looking for a great card in Germany, maybe not Universum Box-Promotion is you company. But their September 27 card is packed with interesting fights. You should watch out for this event! In the main event former CW great (IMO the best CW since Holyfield, that inlc. Haye) Juan Carlos Gomez faces huge puncher Vladimir Virchis in a so-called final eliminator (Gomez has already won 2 eliminators). It's a great matchup. Two power punchers, one with great skills and speed, the other one with raw force. There are few HW matchups I'm getting excited about, but this looks like a good one on paper. Veteran CW champion Firat Arslan defends his WBA belt vs. puncher Guillermo Jones. Both of them are busy and we can expect some fireworks here, and even if Arsan is the heavy favourite you should expect a tough and exciting test for the champ. In another title fight, best CW hope (by far) and huge puncher Alexander Alexeev steps up in comp as he fights tough veteran Rob Calloway in 12 rounds. Calloway, who's TKO losses came in HW, now fights at CW and looking for a title opportunity. But so does Alexeev, and I think he's among the best 5 talents in boxing today, he's just superb. But fight of the night could be the Universum 'Home Grand Prix' between undefeated Denis Inkin and undefeated Karoly Balzsay, for Calzaghe's WBO belt (interim according to boxrec, but Joe has already stated that the Roy fight will be his last). Both Inkin and Balzsay are big punchers but they are even better boxers. 50-50 fight IMO and I expect the winner to be a good player in the post-Calzaghe era at 168. Such a great category with fighters from all over the world: Kessler, Bute, Froch, Taylor, Bika, Andrande, Mundine, Lacy, Miranda, Zuniga, and you can expect Pavlik and Abraham to join the club shortly. The 5th title fight is WIBF Julia Sahin's defense but who really cares. This is such a strong card, I just hope ZDF will televise all 4 big fights. I think all of them are going to be fun to watch.
I guess now or never... What a huge loss to the division... the Cuban talent left the CW division 7 years ago and never took the HW world title run seriously... what a waste of talent, he was 28 back in 2001 and would've been a major player if not a good champion as a heavy in the last 5+ years... :-(
i hope nuts tv covers this. i was very impressed with there coverage of the german bill between valuev and ruiz on saturday. in depth and extensive, better than usual in that they show the fights and not endless interviews with non entities repeating the same thing over and over with fights i want to see going on in the background only to be shown in 1 min highlights at the end as an afterthought. i also am in a minority that i like steve holdsworth commentating.
It would be great if the card was boadcasted outside of Germany. Unfortunately ZDF just don't broadcarst full cards - there's the main event live and some of the fights in the undercard played from the tape afterwards. Pretty stupid, especially if the card is so strong...
Virchis is a Top10 hw and it is an eliminator but Gomez is old and past it though he doesn´t have much time left.
You are right! Kohl really puts up an extremely outstanding fight card. Virchis vs Gomez,Inkin vs Balzsay,Alexeev vs Calloway, and Arslan vs Jones. All these fights with the exception of Alexeev vs Calloway can really go either way. My pick: Either Gomez by decision or Virchis by ko, Inkin by close point decision,Alexeev by brutal ko in round 5,and Arslan by point decision.
Apparently there will be two live fights on ZDF (and no "Sportstudio" interruption as the coverage begins at 23 h this time), the main event Arslan vs Jones is up first and then Alexeev vs Calloway as a sort of late night attraction. Hopefully the latter ends by very quick and devastating KO so that they can show as much of Gomez vs Virchis as possible! Balzsay vs Inkin is OFF due to an unknown injury Balzsay incurred! It could get rescheduled for October 18 in Dresden.
