There has been no formal announcement yet by either the AIBA or USA Boxing.

However, several sources around United States Super Heavyweight Michael Hunter are saying he is now QUALIFIED for the 2008 games.

The word is that the Chinese Super Heavyweight, Zhang Zhilei has a tumor and is unable to compete. The AIBA had set up Hunter as the 1st reserve if anybody dropped out.

Now remember... NONE of this is official yet. If this is infact true, we could expect the announcement at the AIBA Presidents Cup that beings on Sunday.

A tumor? What a horrible news for a young fighter. I hope he's okay!

Wow. I'd be happy for Hunter, but feel really awful for the Chinese kid.

    Hope that isn't true.

Bad news for the Chinese kid. However, and I dont want this to sound disrespectful since the kid is obviously very sick, but at least it will remove any possibility of ridiculous scoring. I was going to bet on Zhilei getting gold. It looks like Roberto Cammarelle is gonna get the medal now!

Fingers crossed though that David Price makes a good impression!

Sound like a hoax, that's extremely unlikely. The spots are awarded based on continental quota. So why should an Asian spot go to America? If an Asian guy drops out another Asian should replace him, that's why there were continetal qualifiers.

The continental quoata's are for qualifications. After all the Qualifiers the governing body (AIBA) sets reserves. If it is true that Zhilei drops out, then it doesnt matter where the 1st reserve is from. So if it is infact true that Hunter is #1 then he goes to the Olympics.

    this is still all speculation

Wow, props to Hunter, but I feel terrible for the Chinese kid. Not being able to compete in the Olympics when they're hosted in your home country AND a tumor?

This guy must've been eating babies for that kind of karma to hit him now.

Exactly, the quotas are for qualification, and you have to qualify for the Olympics, Hunter didn't qualify and all sport from the Americas are taken. So why should an Asian spot go to American instead of the next best Asian from the qualifiers? That doesn't make sense at all and would be pure corruption. You got any source for those "reserves"?
No, you don't need to worry about that, there are decent fighters form the central asian republics that didn't qualify in the qualification tournaments and are not worse than Hunter.
