Hughie doesn't have the advantage of being 6'9" 250+ like Tyson Peter Fury's training methods aren't great when it comes to building strength, they seem ok for stamina but really lacking in the strength category. It's always been an issue with Hughie with the lanky frame and pipe cleaner arms, and Pulev really exploited his physical frailty to great success. I'm not saying hughie needs to become a bodybuilder but he'd benefit greatly from getting on a 5x5 strength routine BETWEEN training camps focusing on bench, deadlifts and squats.
His age and skills go against him. He still has plenty time to mature and learn but I don’t see a world level boxer right now. He needs to try something new(trainer, training) but if he goes in the same vein he’s successful European level at best IMO.
Wilder is skinnier but he has way bigger arms than Fury and wilder despite being very light is also deceptively strong. When he pushed Tyson Fury even though fury was probably 40lbs heavier he went flying backwards. Wilder also manhandled ortiz who outweighed him considerably and is heavy set. Thing with Wilder is he could gain a lot of weight and still be quite lean because he has a lot of muscle and very low bodyfat. He'd still have a 6 pack at 240+ I just don't think being physically frail is a good thing and I don't think his skills would get worse if he gained some mass Lewis put on 20+lbs as did Wlad and their skills didn't magically get worse as a trade off for muscle.
Hughie's lack of success when stepping up into the top 20 HW level has very little to do with physical strength. His main two areas of weakness are not something he can improve upon, through steroids (which he has most likely already taken) or lifting some weights. 1. He mentally is too nice and doesnt have that killer instinct. 2. He also doesnt have the natural boxing athleticism and coordination required at the highest level, in comparison to Tyson Fury his cousin. Now whether is 24 or 34 these 2 things do not get better with age. He is a top 30-40 World HW, and thats nothing to be ashamed of at all. He just comes up short when he takes on a low top 20 HW in Parker and a high top 20 HW in Pulev. Can people please stop using his age as evidence that he can make HUGE improvements. When you are 24 the improvements you will be making will be minor and will be related to technique and training methods, these do not provide you with enough of a boost to go from where Hughie is to being a top 20 or top 10 HW.
Always amazed more trainers don’t read these threads and pick up tips that would turn their lads into world class fighters. It’s almost like their too proud to admit that the average forum user/couch potatoe knows more than them about boxing.
I thought he looked in terrible shape against Pulev. Against Parker he was much lighter on his feet and very slippery, he showed more ability in that fight tbh. Maybe they underestimated how good Pulev was actually going to be and never trained the house down. I think he would definitely add a little bit extra if he had a proper strength and conditioning program. Seems like a fair amount the boxing community frowns upon the science of modern strength and conditioning. I agree it shouldn't have to be a trade of for skills vs strength and conditioning.
His oft shop wasn't good, my missus was watching and was calling him "the fat skinny" one, he really didn't look good round the midriff, not saying he should have a six pack etc but he has no muscle definition anywhere. On another note he boxed well Dornan first 2/3 round and after the cut he just kept throwing the same stupid wild right overhand that's didn't come close to landing. P.s he beat Parker
Odd choice of tactics from Hughie for me. No variation in his work, trying to line up big shots. You're fighting a somewhat inactive older man - pepper him with volume and move around. Standing in the corner looking for a straight right every time doesn't work at this level.
His conditioning was worrying. He seems to lead the life so I am wondering if he has fully recovered from his old illness. The other thing is he was too heavy, with his frame he should not be above 16st imo, though may be better suited for CW.
He is a natural counter puncher and looked very awkward when he forced the action himself and came forward. He was throwing his right hand from his waist and Pulev could read it easily. He should go back to loads of movement circling the ring and countering the mistakes of his opponent, yes it is boring but that is what comes natural to him. Just hold his feet on the counters and put some pop on them.
Yeah exactly man, I said it ages ago - Hughie can't get away with the style like Tyson can because he's not as big and awkward. Tyson gets away with it, Fury is too small to do any real damage or have a wide descision.
Hughie was never leaving Bulgaria with a decision. That's why he went more on the offence, and he was picked apart by Pulev's jab. Nothing wrong with weight training in small amounts. There's different kinds of muscle mass, lean and dense, big and bloated. He'd benefit going to the gym with Joshua, and being taught how to do the arm curl. Lol.
Did you not see all the Bulgarians rolling around laughing their arses off when Hughie stripped off at the weigh in.
