I was just looking at the latest Ring Magazine, and they report that ex-Middleweight champ Hugo Corro died recently of cardio-problems. He was Champ from 1978, when he defeated Rodrigo Valdez, and held the crown until 1979 when he lost a 15 round decision to Vito Antuofermo. According to Argentine sportswriters, Corro wasn't warmly embraced by his countrymen, because his style was so defensive, and his personality wasn't very dynamic either, but following Carlos Monzon is a very hard act as well. He was 54. I thought he was an excellent boxer, but I have tastes that don't follow the mainstream, and I rather enjoyed the 15 round contests when they involved good boxing and subtle strategy and tactics. I take my hat off to Sr. Corro, and my sympathies to his family and survivors.
http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=16208&cat=boxer looked like a good fighter...his two early losses were avenged. and lost a close decision to antuofermo.
He was good boxer, very technichal though. Tough to hit, moved good, got his shots in, fought well all around. Not great, but very good. I'm surprised he died, I remember seeing him fight on television a few times in 1970's.
No, he didnt get any mention last night on ESPN, and that's very sad. To be so obsessed with the flavors of the week, so to speak, and not to be able to give this man, a former WORLD CHAMPION for gosh's sakes is lamentable. That's why, for one of many reasons, that I wish someone would come up with an all boxing cable channel. If racing and golf (!!!) can have one, why not the noblest and oldest sport of all?
Cos there a damn sight more horse racing meetings being held at any given time than there are boxing matches and 1 golf touney gives you 3+ days worth of programmes.
