That was a really good fight while it lasted. That was the fight that showed that Matthysse was the real deal, especially after getting jobbed by Judah and Alexander.

 

I can't even imagine what that feeling must have been like going into the fight knowing that your family was kidnapped. A similar situation happened to Canelo before he fought Rocky Fielding.

Although personally I don't think the results would have changed. Matthysse's power was slowly breaking Soto down.

 

Hiring Stephen Espinoza was a huge mistake for SHO.
2012 to 2015, they had an amazing run but it was because of the "cold war" and Haymon stealing talent from GBP and putting them all on SHO.

But the biggest mistake was yet to come. They allowed Espinoza to sign an exclusive deal with PBC, which was rather costly. And for that they got less fights with a higher cost.
Went from amazing quadruple headers to once a month cards featuring mainly mismatches. PBC just used them to keep busy the guys they otherwise could not afford.
Erislandy Lara got 750k every time he fought, even if the opponent was someone like Yuri Foreman. ****ing madness.

But what a time it was!
On the same card you also had the then rising Omar Figueroa Jr and Jermell Charlo.
Of course, nothing was sweeter on that night than Josesito Lopez breaking Victor Ortiz´ jaw and stealing his spot on the Canelo ticket.

 

Same thing happens with other networks/outlets. I wish they all would keep it open market instead of signing up promotional outfits which leads to what you just said, showcase matchups of their stars vs inferior competition a lot of the time.

 

Soto was a damn good fighter, he fought on Even terms with Matthyse up until the stoppage.
