Despite having clearly not carried the full extent of his power up from featherweight and super featherweight, Soto has established himself as a premiere lightweight. At 30 years old, "Zorrita" has captured the imagination of the boxing public, with his last six years' worth of opposition featuring a who's who in his weight range. He has only been clearly and legitimately beaten once in an entire decade - by a peak & prime Joan Guzman. His boxing skills have improved, in almost greater measure than his power has been reduced by the move up in weight. Since Guzman, nobody has claimed more than 2-3 rounds against him in any contest. Much has been made of his "unsettled business" with certain boxers who campaigned in or near the same divisions as Soto over the last few years - some of whom he has faced before. These include the likes of Guzman, Jorge Solis, Edwin Valero, Juan Manuel Marquez, Robert Guerrero, and Manny Pacquiao. I think that a rematch with Guzman would look very different at 135 or 140. Guzman ran hot and cold in his two matches with Ali Funeka, but in summation he has looked vulnerable enough at "lightweight" (and discomfited by high work rates) to make me think Soto would stand a very good chance at vengeance. A draw or a close decision either way would be my guess here. Soto would likely stop Solis late now, if the latter (scheduled to challenge for Takashi Uchiyama's super featherweight title next month) were to move up. Soto in his current form would have clearly but arduously outpointed the Valero that beat DeMarco (which, IMO, is the best Valero we ever saw). Marquez stops Soto. Look at the Ricardo Dominguez fight, where Soto was hurt by a well-timed right hand in the 2nd round. Marquez would be finding opportunities to land crisp counter punches almost at will (not to disparage Soto's technical skills, but they are far below those of Marquez). If Dominguez and Antillon can get Soto in trouble, Marquez can get rid of him altogether. Robert Guerrero is at the top of his game right now, and has carried his chin and power up to lightweight as well as (if not better than) Soto. I see him winning a decision by a comfortable margin here, being the better all-around boxer. Pacquiao would knock Soto out cold at any catchweight in the 130's or 140's. He's fighting at too high a level offensively and simply wouldn't be bothered by anything the Fox threw his way. What do the rest of you think?
Agree with pretty much everything except I believe Valero would of won easily against the Soto that fight Antillon. Not part of my reason why but a small tidbit of info for those who are unaware... Valero Ko'd Antillon in sparring.
Soto dominated Guzman, by making Guzman run for his life. Soto did to Guzman, what no other fighter had ever done to Guzman, and that is, Soto made Guzman run like a scared chicken. Marquez is scared to fight with Soto. marquez has ducked SOto since 2007, just like Pac, MAB, EM, Robert Guerrero, and so many others have ducked Soto. Pacquiao is also scared to fight SOto, and has ducked Soto for years, since 2006. Soto fakes his performances against Ricardo Dominguez, Antillon, david Diaz, Monterreso. Soto couldve KOd all of them in the 1st round if he wanted to, butv didnt cause he's "playing possum" to lure the big names into fighting him, and not ducking him.
Honestly I don't know if he is or isn't, but I really, really hope he isn't because he is quite embarrassing.
i'm afriad soto has wasted his good years by fighting hard, tough, and rugged wars with B AND C level fighters.....
we all have the right to hug the nuts of any fighter we want....he is a bit overboard though....but hey, SO WAS PACDBEST, and we all know what has happened with pacs career ****er turned out to be a PACSTRODAMUS
I don't think Marquez is capable to win the battle against Soto. Marquez these days is too much hittable and Soto can effectively capitalize this flaw. IMO Soto is younger version of Marquez. Besides Antillon is clearly better fighter than Katsidis. If Katsidis and Juan Diaz can hurt Marguez, Soto can definitely do more than that. I would like to say if Soto and Marguez fight, Soto clearly decision Marquez because Soto is younger and his ability to defense, counter and precisely land punches is enough to give Soto a win against Marquez.
