You beat me to it Magog, Spinks absolutely won the first fight so no blaming the judges or an "agenda" there. The 2nd fight was very close most felt Holmes won but I remember it being close, now it's been probably 20 years since I sat down and watched both start to finish.

Spinks could make Ruddock look bad, he was so awkward, he would leap in and out with flurries to the body and head with good speed and accuracy. His awkward style is a big advantage, you never knew which punch was coming first.

    BUT.........

I can't get out of my mind Holmes nearly dropping and feeezing him in fight #2 with one strait right hand, Spinks stayed up and fought back but if Holmes can hurt him Razor surely can. Spinks will need to be cautious all night long because Razor could put him away!

Spinks Dec unless he gets caught..

Rnd 1 :CLEARLY Cooney won the 1st round walked him compleyety down with the jab ,little was done in terms of power shots ,cooney landed a big right which sent Spinks into the ropes ,Spinks landds little flurries before the bell... Rnd Cooney

Rnd 2: Cooney establishes control with the jab land a body shot ,then shortly aftet throws a left hook ( blocked ) but lands a straght right that knocks Spinks back a few feet. Spinks comes back and lands nothing.Continues to knock spinks back with jabs..spinks l;ands a stiff jab. Spinks starts counter jabbing and landing but is still getting hit and moving back..cooney lands a short uppercut and Spinks has to move back and reset. And eats more jabs..spinks lands a good left hook, cooney answers with his own ( blocked 0 but lands a body shot,,spinks is literally running. Spinks lands over hand right followed by a double left hook and missed uppercut Spinks did enough to the effective aggressor...hes trying to steal rnds but he is not winning them. Rnd 2 Cooney

Rnd 3 : Cooney establishing the jab not much going on for awhile Spinks flurries doesnt hit anything. Spinks landing a one two to stationary cooney who looks exhausted but lands a body shot that buckles spinks backwards, lands more jabs spinks dodges away again like hes been doing. Cooney lands the uppercut ,misses the right hand.Spinks answers with stiff jab and hook but misses the flurrie punches after.Spinks clinchin and trying push Cooney back but eats an uppercut and stumbles into the ropes and back pedals.cooney chasing but missing jabs and rights but you cannot win a fight like that and many Spinks flurries were blocked or didnt land cleanly. Rnd Cooney

Rnd 4 : Again cooney establishing the jab moving spinks back,he then lands a glancing straight right, spinks missing all the flurries he throws..cooney misses 2 left hooks but lands a sweeping uppercut, followed by 3 left hooks one gets in ,Spinks is covering up ,clinches Cooneys forward momentum. Cooney lands a left on top of Spinks head and knocks him backwards, spinks clearing his head by running away, hangs on to cooneys left arm, literally grabs it. Cooney continures to display ring control,he literally following spinks around the ring and misses huge left hook, throwing bombs but missing.End of round and Spinks land some flurry ( not power ) uppercuts, both throw but dont land..I cant see where Spinks would have won that rnd either. Rnd Cooney

Rnd 5 :Spinks landing some good jabs and connects over hand right ,Cooney doesnt look hurt. Cooney continues to stalk but eats a big left hook and covers up to avoid flurries. He continues to push forward lands 2 jabs and a short left hook, spinks then presses forward and land jabs, delivers a quick left hook and sharp right hand on the button.Cooney shakes it off and presses.Spinks comes off the ropes and attacks in flurries lands a big uppercut and is relentless with about 6 right hands that land, cooney stumbles back, throws hooks that are blocked but comes down the pipe with uppercuts and over hand rights in succession snapping cooneys head back and the over hand puts him down. Cooney goes down again from just blocking unanswered shots. a succession of right uppercuts ends the fight while cooney still standing. Rnd and fight : Spinks

there you have it...Had Cooney been in shape he has a much better chance and probably wins this fight ,his accuracy was way off and he was slow and telegraphing than what he can be . i have Cooney winning rnds 1 through 4,give or take a close rnd arguably to spinks but i didnt.

Good post. I remember Holmes wobbling Spinks a few times too but those were with right hands not left upper cuts or hooks like the kind that Ruddock threw. Cooney threw them at Spinks for five rounds to no avail. Of course Gerry was rusty and not in the best of shape but nevertheless those lefts were ineffectual.

I just rewatched the whole fight on YouTube from start to finish. The only round I gave Cooney was the fourth. The rest all went to Spinks and the commentators agreed. One round is hardly enough to say that " Cooney was winning. "

Spinks could win this, Ruddock is powerfull and at his peak ( Tyson fights), he was very durable too. However, Spinks is alot more skillfull and smarter than Ruddock who seems to relied alot on power.

He hardly use his size/reach adventage against smaller opponents which is why he had trouble with taller fighter.

    Spinks by a UD.

Spinks would be so careful vs Ruddock due to the scary power he has, but I wonder if the hand speed and punches from different angles by Ruddock would catch him though. Would be tense.
