when ever a hw champ retires the division is left in some sort of mess, jefries retires and then there are numerous people with a claim, untill johnson beats jefries, tunney retires then there is a mess untill joe louis, marciano retires and then there is the patterson johanson liston triforce, lewis retires and then you have the mess from 03-08.

in the 80's if larry holmes had united all the titles i dont think the division would of stank so much, its a great era for the fans but sketchy when trying to beak it down to a casual.

why is it that when a dominant champ retires we end up with a mess of a division?

Because in this era or any other boxing is ultimately about one man being the best in the world. A man with a title belt or title claim is a man who's claiming to be the best. Most divisions have 3 or 4 such men and until the claims are unified or one stands clear above the others, the division will remain fractured.
