Bigtime Olympian HW's that never went pro.
Some because of their beliefs, others simply because they knew they would be brutalized as pros. Some who had other options that didn't include them getting punched in da face, and some that had their own different reasons not to turn pro.

We all know the bigtime Cubans, Stevenson (3 Gold) and Savón (3 Gold), who didn't turn pro not to betray their country.
But also others like Arnold Vanderlyde (3 Bronze in the Savón era) and currently Clemente Russo (2 Silver) who was mentioned in another thread and who made me think about this.

Who are other Olympic decorated amature HW's that didn't turn pro and do you know why?

Balado never turning pro was a tragedy but him dying at such a young age was sadder. That kid was special.

    To betray their country?

You mean because their country didnt allow it?!

You think If Castro had allowed professional boxing, they'd have stayed amateur?

If going again some tin-pot Communist dictator is "betraying your country", then everyone should betray their country.

You think guys like Mike Perez,Odlanier Solis and Casamayor etc etc etc, "betrayed their country?"

Pretty insulting to guys who risked their lives to get out and make their lives better for them and their kids.

If you ever get to talk Mike Perez and the dozens of other Cuban pros, tell them what a great guy Castro is, and tell them that they're traitors.

When you get out of the hospital, let me know what they said.

Also, I dont have to be from a communist country to know that its a terrible, terrible system of government, much like I dont have to live in a fascist one to know fascism is awful

That's their "official" stance... completely out of free will of course. ;)
    Of course not.

When you say "Cuba", who do you mean?

The couple of 100 guys in government, or ACTUAL Cubans?

Im sure the government says they are traitors.

The actual people who suffer from the regime on the streets of Havana on the other hand....not so much.

do they actually get out with their wives and kids or leave them behind?

For example I was always under the impression Rigos immediate family are al still in Cuba and he had to get some type of pardon to go back and see them a year or two ago

Some have to leave them because they cant smuggle them out.

Guys like Lara end up having 2 families. One in the States and one in Cuba, as the Cuban government wont allow the wife and kids to join them....which is pretty barbaric

Most countries do however, have "surveys" every few years on their government and what type they want. They're called "elections"

Castro was never a huge fan of them....

The Cubans flooding out of Cuba every day are all the proof I need.

If all these people want out(despite the govt making it as hard as possible), then I highly doubt they'd have issues with boxers doing the exact same thing

Who are you to say whether he "tried hard"?

Its the regime that wouldnt allow his family to join him.

Imagine if you moved to England for work and the Irish government
    a) Did everything it could to stop you leaving, and made it illegal for you to leave the country.
    b) Wouldnt allow your kids to re-unite with you when you got there.

Thankfully that obviously wouldnt happen as,despite all its flaws, we have a mildly civilised form of government.

Ive as much "evidence" that you do that the average people think they're "traitors"

If the average Cuban thought that those that fled the country were traitors, they'd have to say a member of their family are traitors, as the levels leaving are literally that high.
