Actually he fought those 9 a toal of 11 times. He fought Patterson 3 times.

I have the hold list of every Heavyweight fighter that was ever rated by Ring, actually I am up to the late 2000's, and all the other divisions up to the end of 1997.

The Ring year books, list number of fights against curently ranked and previously ranked contenders for the lineal champions.

They might make your job a bit easier.

There are good reasons why this pair generaly end up the top two of the list.

    Great job, congrats.

The contexts must also be considered. Old timers had a lot more fights than current fighters. Therefore, more contenders in their resume. For example, Klitschko has 19 wins over Top10 contenders. Dempsey has 23. This seems good for Klitschko and not so good for Dempsey. For a fighter in the 1920s, he should have a much higher number of wins.

The condition of their opponents must also be considered. For example, Larry Holmes' win over Muhammad Ali is counted. However, Ali was a corpse. And also Holmes fought many fighters who had less than 15 bouts. Obviously they were ranked in the Top10, but I still think that each fighter's condition must be seen.

A really good list there, it also does some of the more underrated guys some justice.

And Ali of course is the GOAT :)

Year-end ranking are a bit misleading. Kevin Jonhson and Danny Williams where in ring top 10 when they fought Vitali but they did not make in in annual rankings.

Fortunately I remember the situations fairly well from this time so I didn't have to rely on year end for lewis, byrd, rahman or k2

Re-calculate the post by hitting the edit button on your first post of the thread. I plan to save this one. I do not think Tony Ross was a top ten guy. Good job.

According to MattD's rankings Ross debuted the top 10 in 1908. for the sake of consistency I use his rankings up until the Ring.

I'm wondering whether or not to include Patterson's fight against Maxim; he weighed 177 but I'm sure it would have been regarded as a HW fight, as the opponent was 168. thoughts?

Yes I intend to keep this thread as updated as possible.

It was Patterson who actually weighed 168 pounds at the time.

yeah I realised after I'd typed it but couldn't be bothered changing it because the end result is still the same.

even though maxim was 177 it's still surely a lhw fight?

Matt thinks Ross was a top ten guy in 1909? Ross had a shaky record going into that fight.

Off the top of my head, the following ten in 1909 where better:

Langford, Mcvey, Jeanette, Ketchel, O'brien, Lang, Kaufman, Smith, Burns, and Flynn were better. Still I love to see this list updated and re-posted. Copy and save I will.
