    My intention is to keep the OP as updated as possible. I have a similar project running in the GF atm involving the p4p/hof stars from 80 onwards, I'll post that thread over here once it's done.

    Well I would say Ketchel, Gunboat Smith and Flynn were both better than Ross in 1908 but I suppose you could slip Ross in the very bottom of the top ten and have some debate. Kaufman #3 over Jeanette and McVey in 1908? I have to ask Matt what he was smoking when he came up with that one. According to Matt's ratings, Johnson never meet a top 4 rated guy from 1909-1913

    Ok, I am out for a while. Watching Povetkin vs. Chagaev. The winner should be veiwed as the 3rd or 4th best heavy post Lennox Lewis.

    I have no doubt Ketchell was better but he had no HW resume at all in 1908. Smith hadn't even turned pro at the end of '08 came later and if Flynn or Lang was better it's open to debate. Flynn possible should be there.

    HH, are you sure Botha was never rated in the top 10? I mean, he was IBF champ at 1 stage (oh so briefly albeit) so surely he had to have been ranked somewhere

    I didn't think he was either. You have to remember the talent the top 10 had around the mid-90s.

    The problem you've got with end of year rankings is a fighter could be in the top 10 for a few months, get beat and lose his position

    That's where hh comes in. He's got a database of every hw who's been ranked in the top ten, ever.

    It is possible to join the dots, however. If a fighter beats say the 8th ranked guy and loses later that year i'd include him and assume he got in.

    Botha never actually held the belt did he? Didn't it get overturned?

    Not really accurate though, e.g. Jesse Feguson beat Mercer, who was rated (around) 8th and he didn't get in.


    He won the title and was stripped after failing drugs test.

    Aye that was one of the mistakes I made. In general it does seem to be the case so i'm not sure why ferguson never made it.

    Just to let you know, there are a total of 391 different Heavyweights that were rated by the Ring Magazine since it started in 1925. The only problem is that in 1989, they only had 4 issues, and then in some other years, they had as many as 14 issues.

    yes sometimes I have to join the dots a bit, especially early on.

    you're database is epic though.

    must have taken you a very long time compiling it!
