If I throw a punch and straighten the elbow, will it damage my elbow joints at all? I heard conflicting advice from a TMA guy and on an MMA board.
If you overextend and really whack it into place there, then you are not doing the elbow any favours. I can't see mechanically how you could hyperextend your elbow and connect with a punch. You can hyper-extend and miss, or you can try to hyper extend and connect on the way.
