There's so many clowns on ESB than you could start a circus.... *I've seen plenty of posts by Calzaghe fans claiming that Hopkins is overrated. Way to give credit to Joe you idiots!!! *The same people then claim Calzaghe should be promoted as the No.1 pound for pound champion now that he has defeated the 43 year old "overrated" Hopkins. *Hopkins fans are claiming a victory of sorts because a) he won on a Stevie Wonder's scorecard, b) he didn't get knocked out BUT did score a knockdown. *Hopkins OR Calzaghe (depending on the post) done well against a dirty fighter which made their victory/robbery all the more impressive. *Joe Cortez cheated.....someone (Hatton?) In my opinion this fight proved NOTHING. We all knew Joe would slap Hopkins plenty more times than Hopkins would land his counter punches. We all knew that Hopkins would use his old tricks and Calzaghe would try and stand his ground and fire back in kind. We knew Hopkins was getting on and past his best although his style of fight meant that he could still bring a decent game to the table. And we all knew that should it go the distance as expected then the judges would pull something stink'n out their arse. The only thing we didn't know was if this fine pugilistic art would spring a surprise on us...it didn't. SO STOP JUGGLING THE BULL****.:silly
Agreed, I was hardly surprised with the outcome of the fight. Only surprise was the 1st round knockdown, which was a great short right by Bernard. I knew Joe was gonna win. He's a good slapper.
Hopkins was overrated on ESB, and I am not an idiot. JC didn't take the fight because it was difficult.
Well that's basically it isn't it, unless a foul or cut or injury threw a spanner in the ring. Fact is that the Hopkins that beat Tito at middleweight doesn't exist. That's not to say that he hasn't fought well in his last few fights but none of his fights at light-heavy have been against guys with speed as their main weapon. At 43 you'll always get caught out if you require your speed, agility and reflexes. Remember he fought Winky over a year ago and fought once a year before that. What a way to lose your ability, there aint no better. As for Calzaghe, there's no other fighter in history that has me dumbfounded, I just don't believe he is as great as others do but he keeps on winning. When you take a closer look you see that his resume still lacks that punctuation mark!!! Which fight/fights make Joe an ATG? Chris Eubank, Howard Eastman, Mikkel Kessler, Robin Reid, Jeff Lacy and a 43 year old Hopkins. How can a guy fight pro for 14 years, be a world champion for over a decade yet only have these guys as his best wins??? Who does he fight next? Evanda Holyfield OR George Foreman??? I believe a fight v Roy Jones Jr would be 10 times more exciting than todays. What I really would like to see is Joe Calzaghe fight someone that has SPEED as their main weapon.
What better thread to post that I just watched the fight again.....and gave it even at 115-115. 10-8 / 10-9 / 10-10 / 10-9 / 10-10 / 9-10 / 9-10 / 9-10 / 10-10 / 10-9 / 9-10 / 9-10 Considering I had three rounds even it shows how hard the fight was to score. If you believe good defence, acuracy, powershots etc should be rewarded then I give it 115-112 Hopkins. If you believe agression, workrate punches landed are the go then 115-112 Calzaghe is right (as one judge did) After watching the fight I had it 118-111 Calzaghe. I now believe that this was due to my disappointment in what was expected of Bernard and that Calzaghe done more than I thought he could, thus I rewarded him. I'll add that plenty of Calzaghe's shot's were hitting Hopkins on the back or the back of the head so they weren't scored. Many of his scoring shots were so poor in quality it was hard to score them, but score them I did. As my wife said as she watched the replay..."How the hell did this guy go undefeated for so long HE SLAPS LIKE A *****. I guess slaps count too.
