Why does calzaghe get so much flack when compared to other fighters who were just as bad or worse? Hopkins How can a fighter that has a lot of bums on his resume like calzaghe, was more of a stay at home fighter than calzaghe, ducked calzaghe in prime and lost to calzaghe past prime be considered so much better than calzaghe? Chad dawson Calzaghe only fought ATG when were old!! he should face Chad who errr only fights ATG when they old?. And wouldnt chad vs calzaghe just be chad fighting another old ATG? There is no denying calzaghes resume wasnt the best but Jones saw it as a to low reward vs risk, Hopkins ran away, ottke refused ect. Glen johnson is the one fighter who i think we can all agree he avoided but apart from that who else was he suppsoed to fight?. You have to remeber he was the champion and belt holder so coming to america to fight 2nd rate fighters was never an option and since the 1st rate americans didnt want anything to do with him what was he suppsoed to do?. Alot will say he should have swallowed his pride but please how many alpha male boxing champions have ever done that? .. answer is very few, Froch did it altely and look at all the respect it earned him.....
Calzaghie may have genuine excuses as to why he hasn't fought the best, but that doesn't give him a pass, if you want to be considered the best you have to find a way to fight the best
Calzaghe got ignored by American fighters because he was high-risk, low-reward (i.e. money) for a long time. An unfortunate reality for European fighters up until the last decade. He did fight top contenders and mandatories for his entire career. Taking on an obvious mismatch (i.e. Peter Manfredo) only happened as a way to get American fans (who following his beatdown of Lacy, he seemed to desparately want). Joe's record should be better, but he was ignored by Toney and Jones when they were at SMW as well as Hopkins. Heck, top Europeans Sven Ottke (a real phony) and Steve Collins (a real great) retired as Calzaghe was calling them out hard (which seems to parallel Froch's obession with Joe a little bit). Only when Joe finally became a draw become the ONLY undisputed SMW champ did Jones and Hopkins seriously start calling him out. Sure, Jones was a shadow of himself by this point, but not Hopkins by a long shot. I think only in the Jones fight has Hopkins finally shown signs of his age (although continually forgetting to find his corner between rounds with Joe might have made him look that way, too). He just barely makes my top 50 ATG list thanks to facing his hardest opposition in the last three years of his career. He still managed to face eight champs and former champs during his career.
Because everybody in ESB apparently has boxing experience except Me. So they know how relatively easy Calzaghe's opponents are.Who am I kidding?I have seen a few of Calzaghe's fights and although he seem not to have a KO power due to brittle hand, what could you ask more? He comes to fight and brings the fight to you. My kind of fighter! Not the ballerina in the ring ones.
His fan boys like to call him the greatest fighter ever despite Calzaghes best 3 wins looking like UD Kessler, UD Lacy, and SD Hopkins. Not only that Calzaghe himself is so much full of it, he thinks he beat legends, when they were in there forties. He didnt want to rematch Hopkins, didnt want to fight mandatory Froch, if he can fight guys like Manfredo and Tocker and Starie and Veit, why cant he fight Froch?. He chose RJJ instead of Pavlik. He never took risks where the odds may have been against him, or the odds would have been close, he chose easy options from day one to day dot. How does Calzaghe's best wins (UD Kessler, UD Lacy, SD Hopkins, SD Reid, UD RJJ) rank higher than Hopkins best wins (KO12 Trinidad, KO9 Hoya, UD Tarver, UD Wright, UD Pavlik). When your best wins are split decisions against old, or c level fighters, that dont make you an a level fighter.
I mean people here accept american A listers didnt want to fight calzaghe because to high risk vs low reward, so that would leave B listers who would have jumped at the chance to fight calzaghe for his belt. But calzaghe was the champion so why should he have been forced to fly across the world to fight against B level fighters for very little reward just to please the americans. When he did get the chance to fight an american A lister in Hopkins he agreed and jumped at the chance to go to america and fight. But then Hopkins ran away at last minute so thats hardly Calzaghes fault. In calzaghes mind HE was as much as a champion so why shouldnt he act like one.
Aint a lot of chad dawsons best wins vs old fighters? does that mean we can discredit him now as a fraud? Infact when was last time dawson fought someone not old?
When he finally got the attention of the whole boxing world, he chose to fight 39 year old RJJ. That aint going to prove you are one of the greatest. If he truly wanted to show the whole world he was one of the greatest, then at the time when he had everyones attention why settle for a shot RJJ. Dawson is following his fights with old guys with pascal so why you comparing that to Calzaghe?
Unfortunately, whether you like to admit it or not, the biggest stage for boxing is in the USA. It has the most money, the biggest fights and a greater average quality of fights. Joe might have been having good fights, but they were going largely unnoticed by the American audience. If you want the recognition, and also the money, you have to fight in the States at some point.
I know this and you do but we outsiders, Try to look at it from the view as an individual who beleives himself to be the best. Also remeber before lacy he didnt really seem the type that went for recognition, this can also be seen in way he was never caught on camera out or about, never in the papers, never on tv shows. After lacy and he got bitten by the fame bug it all changed but before that he seemed a true profesional who probally beleived challengers should come to the champion. In hind sight he probally regrets it ofc but this is all beside my point. My point is about why aint other boxers critisided for same thing. Where are the endless threads about how dawson fights old men or how Hopkins ducked calzaghe?
Hopkins gets plenty of stick for his biggest wins being against undersized opponents. Thing is though Hopkins gets more recognition because he had those big fights, on the biggest stage, highly publicized wins over Tito and Oscar. Maybe not as well publicized (in the States) as Calzaghe's wins over Lacy and Kessler. Dawson is always getting ripped on for fighting old men, whenever he comes up, which isn't that much. Dawson is fighting in relative obscurity at the moment because he's fighting old men. He's not going to make it big until he fights some good oppoents in their prime.
