I think there is a huge double standard in this. Lennox Lewis and both Klitchkos were constantly called cowards, quitters or talked about like they had no heart. Fighters like Holyfield and Brewster were constantly referred to as true warriors and the like. Now Lennox Lewis said it best himself "I´d like to be able to enjoy life after I retire" - or basically, be healthy. He faced great competition in his career and is in no way a coward. Vitali quit a fight once on a serious injury, against Byrd. His face was also shredded against Lewis, but he wanted to fight on. He is not a quitter. Wlad got up off the floor I don´t know how many times against Sanders and tried to fight on. He kept fighting Brewster till he couldn´t stand anymore. He is not a quitter or a coward. Evander Holyfield IS a true warrior, but he´s also an idiot for fighting on like he does. He´s tarnished his legacy and done a lot of damage to himself by doing that. Compare that to Lewis who retired a champion and is healthy today. :deal Brewster quit on his stool like a b**ch against Klitschko, after saying Wlad would have to kill him to win. He did not have a serious injury (although he might have sustained one if he´d gone on). Before this fight there was all this talk from a lot of people about Brewsters iron will and iron chin - compared to the cowardliness and china chin of Klitschko. These people - and Brewster himself - should really eat their words. :nono
Lewis was a classier fighter than Klitschko to be fair and was in some decent brawls like Mercer and Bruno.....and had a better chin But I see your point..Vladimir isn't so bad at all....I think the boring factor of rthe fight was exaggerated by the fact that it was 2 eastern europeans in there fighting
I agree 100% with everything except when you said Brewster was a quitter. He retired in his corner because he had no answer for Klitschko's defense and he was being pummeled & probably would've been KO'd within a round or 2. Lamon did the right thing.
I think he did the right thing too, but it´s still quitting Now why does he get praise for doing "the right thing" when Vitali is called a quitter for quitting with a very serious injury?
Vitali quit the Byrd fight while ahead on points due to a torn rotator cuff which needed surgery to repair. If he fought on the damage may have ended his career and we would've never seen his KO's of Johnson, Sanders & Williams, 3 of my favorites. Only an ass thinks Byrd would've won the rematch.
didn't Lacy fight at least half a fight with a torn rotator cuff? AND still won. I forget who it was against but I know it was post Calz.
Good thread. Something that is way overrated in boxing is macho demeanor. Liston was a horrible quitter - in the first fight of his career where he couldn't bully his opponent, he just quit on his stool without being seriously hurt. Mike Tyson quit in the second fight against Holyfield, biting his ears TWICE so that disqualification was the only option. Yet these two fighters, because of their barbaric personality traits, are widely regarded as menacing warriors, whereas classy fighters like Lewis or the Klitschkos are regarded as pussies for quitting when serioulsy injured or fighting a careful fight.
Danny Williams fought on with his arm hanging out the socket and went for the ko with his other hand, Vitali just quit! Larry Merchant had it right when he said, "He just doesnt have the heart of a champion".
Heres what Tyson thinks about the likes of Vitali Klitschko quitting, he says they dont understand the code! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOw0R5aoswE
Anyone that steps between those ropes and fights another human being under the conditions boxing throws at you has more heart than most of us will show in our entire lives. Period.
Simply put, exciting fighters put asses in the seats. Paying fans have a right to ***** and moan when they see a boring contest, even if it involves a brilliant display of tactical proficiency.
