My name was legend in my lifetime, oh how the mighty has fallen, as I was forced to make ends meet in a small circus act. I was ?
Yes Mc, twas Jack Johnson the great Galveston Giant heavyweight champion, who years before he died was working in a small circus act which my dad took me to see in Hubert's Flea circus on B'way off 42nd street, NYC. He was in the basement wearing a beret if I recall, punching a bag and chatting with some spectators...We shook his hand and later my dad told me about Jack Johnson. A year or two later, Jack Johnson was driving to the Joe Louis/ Billy Conn fight, when he crashed his car and died. Nat Fleischer and others considered JJ the best heavyweight ever, but who can tell...:hi:
Just to ad some trivia, Jorge Paez was a pretty damn good featherweight who grew up in the circus and I believe was a clown. Very flamboyant fellow and an interesting fighter to watch.
"El Maromero" is supposedly a reference to an act he performs in the circus. Dunno if he is still active in that profession.
