i always wondered why floyd don't discuss boxing from a technical standpoint

for a guy that might be arguably the most skilled fighter ever, its weird how he never talks about fighting or just break it down like hopkins do

its almost like its instinctive for him and hes not even totally aware of the art of boxing. i know that's not true but it seem like a boxing textbook like floyd would talk about technique more

this the only thing i ever seen with him doing that

He's probably just not very good at conveying his boxing knowledge. . . not exactly the sharpest tool in the box, especially linguistically - not an extensive vocabulary, etc.

Also, I really think that Floyd doesn't "like" boxing anymore. . . He just views it as his "ATM", if you will. . . It's like he's been doing it for so long, he literally "just knows" what to do. . It's like shitting, showering, and shaving for your common man - he just "knows".

    LOL

It's a persona. The whole i dont need to try, or think, or analyze, im just gifted and i can handle any situation... PERSONA.

Floyd has an amazing boxing pedigree and comes from a boxing rich background. He has lived and breathed boxing all his life. He is called old school because he is just that. Very old school. Anyone think his diet and strength and conditioning programme is that complex? Guarantee it isn't half as complex as Cotto's or Pacquaio's. Old fashioned roadwork and an extremely high volume of actual skills work and honing his craft. The emphasis is placed on boxing skills first and foremost. Don't think he isn't absolutely analzing the nuances of the game. He has physical gifts but his abilities are predominantly the result of a life long dedication to mastering the sweet science in it's purest form. Floyd has absolutely everything to lose. His persona is so heavily grounded in his perfect record. There is no way that man is simply coasting on what he knows to get a payday.

The carefree money mayweather persona he puts out there conceals the real boxing nerd he absolutely had to be to get where he is today. I have no time for Mayweather's bull**** persona. What i do respect is what he represents as a boxer. That being that even today with all progress made as it pertains to sports science, strength and conditioning, nutrition etc. The development of ones skillset must trump all.

I was thinking this also. The reason why great athletes usually don't make good coaches. They're so good at what they do, they don't even know how they do it

He didn't like boxing before he took his retirement. His love for it has come back. You can't be that way when you listen to him talk as he is a bit of a historian of the sport. However, we all know that Floyd is awkward at getting out his thoughts. He really is a boxing savant though. He might not know about a lot of things, but he sure as hell knows what to do in a boxing ring

Yeah, I pointed this out earlier as well - I do think his enthusiasm for boxing has somewhat returned. . . Which is why I really do see him fighting 1-2 times a year on a consistent basis; I think he'll have another 5-6 fights. . .

I don't know about him being a historian of the sport, though. . . I've never heard him say anything insightful regarding past fistic eras. . . Heard him drops names like Ali, Robinson, Leonard, Duran. . But never really elaborate. EX: "Ali had such a great jab, and he was brilliant on the outside. . " Or, Robinson was the perfectly balanced boxer, he could do it all: fight off the back foot behind a jab, fight on the inside, etc. . . "

I agree 100% about him being a boxing savant; he simply can't convey his thoughts very well.

I disagree. He is more articulate than most other boxers.

More so than some, guys like Dawson, and Alexander . . . But definitely not as articulate as a lot of other boxers we've heard speak.

But regarding boxing, he's never really broken down the sweet science. . . maybe it's just his persona, maybe he can't convey his thoughts that well, or maybe he just doesn't feel like it :bart

Very interesting thread. I've been wondering the same thing for a long time as well. It's true that someone people can be a master at something and just can't seem to explain how to do exactly what they do to someone else.
