Matchroom have the exclusive deal with SKY 20 dates a year (including prizefighter not a big fan but won't go into that here!)

McDonnell was fighting on SKY previously reading between the lines interviews etc Hobson hoped SKY would pick the whole show up the date obviously then would have been changed. He obviously wanted sole promotional rights big,big mistake tv dictates dates & certainly the finances to cover a decent size show. Can't post links but look up Hobson's views on SKY & Matchroom strong words about a 'monopoly' in a Daily Telegraph article 01/04/13.

Again just my views....he had enough time to change dates to at least get a decent crowd & maybe alternative tv coverage for him at this point Boxnation would have been better than Primetime PPV against Burns madness. He tried to make a point that the promotion could work. But without tv & to go head to head v SKY IMO you are throwing money away only one winner.Only channel 5 here on free to air tv are showing boxing but seem only to deal with Mick Hennessy (Fury,DeGale) so another closed door!

The key point Matchroom have ALL the SKY dates so the boxing budget for the UK is allocated.Matchroom would not of been happy had even a small rival promoter having tv exposure on a one off deal on a platform where an exclusive deal was in place without their involvement!Hope that makes sense knock on doors all you want it's an exclusive deal.

The article I mentioned worth a read the deal with SKY seems so tight that any promoter offering a fight to SKY are asked to deal with Matchroom first!Again I can only go on what the article says but when exclusive deals are placed you have to be the one making the sacrifice.Hobson it seems let his pride rule his business head like I say should of put pride to one side!

M where was the manager in all this or is Hobson directing all the traffic? In England can the manager and promoter be the same guy? Hobson dropped the ball now McDonnell is in for a costly legal fight and may have to sit on the bench awhile. A shame really in what should have opened the door to bigger and better things now looks kind of gloomy. Hobson should have known better to me McDonnell's win was the bigger news over a HOF Nacho Beristian trained fighter. Ego's sometimes get in the way of good judgement. Hope McDonnell gets over this.

Hobson was certainly directing all the traffic for the Ceja fight Frank Maloney (recently retired Lewis ex-manager) was also involved a for a long time with McDonnell.

It wasn't like Matchroom/Hobson hadn't worked together before McDonnell beat Darwin Zamora IBF eliminator shown on SKY the previous October.McDonnell has fought regularly on SKY previously so all parties were not unfamiliar.

Reading this evening the BBOC (British boxing board of control) claim the contact is valid between McDonnell & Hobson & no complaint from the fighter....well other sources say different his solicitor had issued a statement! For the promoter/manager officially can't be the same person (Ali law in affect)to my knowledge but you know the game far better than me Dempsey many ways to have total control directly or indirectly!

The upshot McDonnell has fought once in a year for a fighter of his calibre not nearly enough. It's been five months since he won the title & the only fight on the horizon looks like taking place outside the ring at present unless bridges can be mended.

You can't help but think had common sense been shown in May we wouldn't be at this point now.

How did you become a boxing manager Dempsey? how did you learn? is there any way a normal person can learn about the business and one day become a manager? just interested to hear how it all starts from someone who is actually a manager themselves.

If you were normal you would find something else to do in life. I am from NYC and was an avid reader of the boxing mag's at the time. Looking primarily at the results, which at time were month's old, so I started looking for my own sources. Mexican fighters were starting to make noise, and nobody knew much about them. So I became everybody's Mexican expert, from there I became an advisor, to many in the business, from fighters, trainers, managers, matchmakers, media people and promoters, which led to management.
Being a manager is not easy and I wouldn't recommend this for my worst enemy. There is a saying that should serve as a warning, "Never fall in love with a boxer or *****, they will break your heart all the time". Good luck

Cheers, I think it's fair enough they deal with matchroom if they want a fight on SKY....deals can always be made! Hobson serious mistake which has a knock on effect to the fighter which is terrible..

I also hope Mcdonnell gets his deserved exposure and recognition.

Well things just got worse for McDonnell this afternoon breaking newspaper reports locally (Sheffield star) he has been stripped of his IBF bantamweight title.

Failure to agree a defence against South African Vusi Malinga cited as the reason a mandatory defence was due next month. The main sticking point backs up what has been discussed here this week the split/legal issues between promoter/fighter.

A fighter's nightmare lose your title outside of the ring, loss of earnings & the the fact you have moved forward one step & now back several.

M who manages or represents McDonnell besides Hobson? Sounds to me that he needs someone to push his side.

Dempsey beside Hobson I honestly have no idea Frank Maloney(recently retired) was heavily involved up until the last year or two.....it is complicated there may be a third party but from experience you would know some like to remain way in the background.

The promoter/manager issue seems to be a grey area this side of the pond McDonnell was fighting on SKY as mentioned earlier with Matchroom (Eddie Hearn) as the promoter but come the Ceja fight a deal couldn't be done?Hobson may well have priced his man out again.....my opinion....

Hobson cut a deal promoting that fight with Primetime PPV last minute it doesn't add up the more you go into it.The chances of the show breaking near even were totally unrealistic at that point.

Bad promotion on this front a given.McDonnell has been approached with a offer/s IMO but who has advised him a split would be straightforward because these things never are.Hobson has left himself seriously out of pocket with the Ceja fight no way he will just walk away without a serious settlement because the BBBOC (British board) have stated the contract between them looks watertight!

Very messy all round title looks vacated all sides now lose madness.

Hobson has come out swinging, in a press release. Is McDonnell not allowed to have advisors in the UK? Advisor's are supposed to give their opinions why is that bad, it could be used as a basis to negotiate. I would love to look at that contract he has with McDonnell, to me just going on what M has written it would seem that McDonnell's interest were not fully served cos at the end of the day he is the one facing the upcoming nightmare.
Here is the statement from Hobson:
    Statement from Dennis Hobson Promotions:

“We understand that the IBF have vacated Jamie McDonnell’s title as Bantamweight Champion because he failed to comply with a Resolution of the IBF Board of Directors. It is sad that Jamie McDonnell has been stripped of his World Title, especially when, in partnership with Dennis Hobson Promotions

he was able to achieve his boxing ambitions and become world champion at the Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster on 11 May 2013. It was a fabulous night for Jamie, for his team, and for British boxing, and we were particularly pleased when Jamie was gracious enough to say that he would not have become world champion without the team at Dennis Hobson Promotions.

“Unfortunately, in recent weeks Jamie has allowed third parties to influence him, to advise him and to make representations on his behalf – without any reference to us. This is in clear contravention of the contractual relationship he has with Dennis Hobson Promotions. The consequences of such unauthorized influence, advice and representations by these third parties have obviously, with today’s news, been catastrophic for Jamie.”

No further comment will be made by Dennis Hobson Promotions at this juncture.

Hey Dempsey. Just started off boxing last week and have 0 experience. I have hired a trainer and already went twice (would go everyday if had the finances) Once I get into sparring with a few people, what will be the next step into getting myself into sanctioned fights? Should I just build connections as I go along?

B_E, Don't rush it, depends on how much you pick up from what your coach is trying to teach you. Please clear up something when you say you hired a coach?
Usually you would be required to pay monthly gym dues and a trainer at that gym would help you. There should not be an extra charge for a trainer, also a gym is open usually 5-6 days a week and you should be able to go at any time the gym is open.
Do some research attend an amateur show see what the lay of the land is, ask questions, of guys of like experience and trainers but mostly observe what's going on. Like someone once told me, go to the gym and "keep your mouth shut and your eyes and ears open.". Work on the basics first everything else should fall into place, good luck
