..KG..this is what i would do..(but Dempsey is the guy with most experience)..i don't think a promoter will take you, without him knowing anything about you(can you fight, amteur rec.,etc).and its not to your best interest either....i would keep going to the gym,but...you must get to know your trainers(they have the connections and experience to guide you along)..and the guys working there..cus they will help you(each other)..with sparring..worst thing you can do is train throughout the year and not advancing in your career (this is assuming you got the skills allready )...also,when you workout in the gym...ALWAYS give it your all..dont just go through the motions..always high intensity..no pitty-ptt punches..sparr everytime you have a chance..etc...youll do that, trainers will be interested in you & approach you..also you should get some amateur fights under yr belt, you need to be getting used to being in the ring, boost yr confidence, show trainers/managers/promotrs what you got..etc)..so,keep working on yr skills aggressively(but smart)...and get working with a trainer youre confident with,,(one you like his training style) ..tell him how far you want to take it...hell guide you through the next step..always workout to the best of your abilities..not only to impress yourself, but also to the people watching you! (trainers,managers..etc)..cus you never know who might take an interest in you...(or tell other people about you) ..:bbb

respect peleador thanks for the reply. Yeah i need to get some exposure. part of posting on here is to see the suggestions first. I've always been my own trainer, that why i always had problems with the other trainers. my plan at the minute is to go to a few of the gyms and ask if anybody looking for a sparring partner. and i could show where I'm at. Also to do some youtube videos. Really just have to get myself out there quick. Not many people in my position where they are unknown and been in and around fighting for the last 7/8 years. No worries with the ring, no worries fighting. But I dont know the signing up process. So its the trainers i should be showing, get there backing, and then speak the promotor? I will keep everyone updated

..yea,like Jasper said..you shouldnt be looking for your first fight yet..you gotta do it the right way...get into a serious boxing gym(if your not going to one allready)..not a boxing fitness gym.. let an EXPERIENCED trainer tell you when your ready...thats their job..theyve been around this game many years..(they should be,anyways)..hell guide you along..in regards to asking at gyms about sparring..id suggest dont even do that,... your trainer will let you know when your ready..show him you know what your doing-hell put you in there for a few rounds ,with no prob...hope this helps...:bbb

Jeez, sorry I missed this post completely Peleador and Jasper told you correctly

What would you advise a confident fighter (me) looking to get his first pro fight.
I would go to the promoter’s gym, first thing, see who's who and what's what. Start talking to guys at the gym, the fighters, the trainers and tell them your intentions. They might give you good advice and at least the fight people will start getting to know you.

i am not involved in the local scene so have a fair few questions. should i be speaking to the promotor?
The promoter should be working with a matchmaker, if not then find out who the go-to guy is, could be the promoter himself. The matchmaker/promoter if they know what they are doing, will size you up, your weight, age and experience. More then likely you may fit for a guy he is taking care of, likely you will be the “B” side, if he reads you right.
or are you supposed to get a trainer to do the talking for you?
First you should feel confident that whoever is in front of you like a manager or trainer knows what he is talking about and not be looking at you as an opponent-type, so that he can make some money. Ask questions if he is evasive in anything, could be a reason. Gyms especially gyms a promoter owns is full of wannabe’s who will tell you this or that to get you to sign a managerial contract.

What does it usually take to get onto the card?
Not much if you fit the promoter’s card, as an opponent. Your lack experience and of a trainer/manager tells the promoter/matchmaker, everything they need to know about you.
is it sparring and beating a guy at the gym?
Look people will be watching and sizing you up if you spar. One way to get noticed is to kik some a$$ or just look good. I have a fighter, who got a promotional contract with a major promoter, cos he looked good in sparring. He had just turned 17 and only fought in the 15-16yr age bracket. The kid first attracted the attention of Manny Paciquao while he was punching the heavy bag, the next day he sparred with Wale Omotoso, 19-0, 17ko’s. The kid is now 20yr and 17-0, his last fight is on youtube, Alex Saucedo – Eduardo Flores. BTW, the kid didn’t beat up Omotoso but was competitive and looked good.
i always train at home (years) how do you convey that you want your first pro fight without coming off as rude or that your a know it all with no record to back you?
Go to the gym and show your stuff, punching the bag, sparring, working out, make them notice you and want to talk to you.

i look like i could be a youngster but am actually 31.

Your age could be a problem, for instance they will tell you cos of your age you have to be on a fast track cos you can’t waste anytime.

I think most people get there route by sticking with the gym a while making friends and eventually earn there shot. Whats best for me,
Get to talking with everybody in the gym the fighters, and trainers even guys just hanging out, they might have some information you could use.
I will do well in the fights and i want to get this going (been on my mind for years). i want to get a record going. does the small local promoter lock you in with a contract?
Yes if they see something they can exploit, tie you up cos they can make a few bucks throwing you in, or if you are lucky somebody might see your potential or lack of.

does it matter if you dont like them haha? or could you just do a few fights?

One thing you have to understand, guys who have around know what they see. Do as Peleador and Jasper said, about training at a gym.

question-..iv seen up to 5 people working in fighters corner,.is 5 really necessary.?..
You should have at least three or four, the head coach, the cutman and the assistant coach and or S&C guy.
seems to me thats overkill..does only one guy have the responsability to throw in the towel when necessary?..who?..
    The head coach.
As far as pay goes some head coaches want the whole 10% and may not want to share in that case, you may have to pay the S&C guy 1-3%, the cutman 1-2%. I usually tell the trainer to work off the 10%, in other words, the fighter pays 10% that's it. Guys like Alex Ariza want a contract and 3%.

...Saucedo vs. Flores...:good theres an example-if theres talent, show it off alittle,.hitting the bag, sparring etc...and the right people will find/guide you.
Good talent to work with + an experienced team on your side = high probability of succsess...
..demps,...here in California basically theres no age limit of turning pro..(theres a limit,,but way higher than in most other states).my question is.
If a fighter, say is 39 yrs ..and he gets his pro license in California,..can he fight anywhere he wants after that?...or is there a possibility the athletic Commision of the other states wont let him fight.cus of the age the fighter was when he turned pro.? (this is assuming he allready got his license in California).thnx :bbb
