I hope it was the weight and the fact that he looked very out of shape, but I dunno. He needs to get serious about his conditioning and get down to 235, where he'd be much quicker on his feet in my opinion. He also leaves his hands way too low.

Happy my man won but not impressed. Let's hope he is is MUCH better shape for the rematch with Wlad next. If he is, and keeps his hands up, I think he's got a shot.

Vlad will knock Peter out in their rematch. Povetkin would beat Peter by decision.

Peter's limitations have been exposed gradually over several fights. He is muscle bound, and his potential to improve is limited. Peter belongs in the top 10, but he really isn't a candidate for world's best heavyweight.

If not for 15 months of inactivity coming into this fight, Maskaev probably would have beaten Peter.

Peter looked gas after the first 30 seconds of the fight. He is the next Shannon Briggs of the division. Someone call Iggy, this bum needs to be schooled. It's not worth Wlads time, he's just way too slow for him.

I'm a Peter fan too, but this is how he fights...he's about the same weight as the second Toney fight, which was his best shape...and he's always in about the same shape.

...he's not the next IKE...he's a bull and he fights like a heavy fighter. The weight is no issue...he didn't want to have too high a volume of punches, because the crafty old Maskaev would have a better shot to expose a Peter weakness. :smoke

So Sam had a strategy in this fight? His last 4 fights: 37 year old, Toney, 37 year old McCline, 39 year old MASKAEV.
    The man is going nowhere.

I respect your good observation. And no matter how much you might dislike Wlad you cannot deny that he is the favorite

The good think about Peter is Vital won't need a tune up fight. Peter will be his tune up fight.

Peter knew what he was doing. He did not have to fight at high tempo. He was cagey and allowed Maskaev to open from Maskaev caution then stepped it up and took his chances. Klitscko cannot take the punches Maskaev got caught with. Don't compare Peter with Ike Ibeabuchi they are different style of fighters. Peter is not as gifted as Ike no news in that but he is strong has real power can take a punch and is very game prepared to fight anyone as he has shown. Well done Sam we are very proud of you. Keep it up. This was much better than the Klitscko versus Ibrahimgov pacifism.

Yeah, you guys must have not seen many of Peter's fights. That's how he's fought recently. I think he looked a bit better in the sense that he is maturing as a fighter. He took his time, found the opportunity and finished the night. At first I cringed when he had Maskaev hurt by a right (in the 2nd I think) and he started unloading wild punches. I thought he was going to throw himself out, but no he didn't. He took a step back, kept his composure and kept on to his game plan. One thing that did surprise me is his movement and ability to avoid some of Maskaev's shots. He has shown to improve his defense, and he doesn't fight as a wild man like before. One problem I would like to see him clear up is keeping that left hand low. Besides that, I did see improvements in his fight game, although I know some of you were expecting a much better showing.

I have to say though I think that Peter was in better shape in the 2nd Toney fight, although he weighed the same. He definitely seemed more motivated and kept his work rate up. But I think this has to do with who he was fighting. Against Toney, he faced a lesser threat in that he could walk through all of Toney's punches without a problem.

Sure peter looked like ****, as he is.

Maskaev is suppose to have an egg shell for a chin!! And Peter couldnt put him down after 20 power punches in a row. His power is so overrated and his chin is overrated. Vitali is going to **** him up badly!

I think Sam is an unfocused fighter. I believe he needs a trainer who's gonna stay on his case in training and in fights. Although crude, Sam has developed some skills over time.
He has a good jab, and would throw it and land it nicely in this fight, and then completely abandon it, and do next to nothing in much of the rest of the round. Just no consistency at all.
I also believe Peter should fight at between 238-245 to be at his best. This was a very slow-paced fight, and yet Peter was starting to look winded shortly before he scored the KO.
I would agree he didn't look that impressive overall, but he did close the show.

He NEEDS to get down to 240-245 so he has speed and stamina. Too slow tonight...

Yeah, too slow, over-rated power and chin. Nothing special in boxing skills.

Vitali is going to murder him.
