There, I said it. Bring your sarcasm. I had a lot of bad things to say about Haye, but he has emerged as a good potential match up for one of the Klits. Add to that a re-emergent Tua, and Chambers and Povetkin who are on deck, And I think you have the makings of a good first teir. Welcome to the divison, Tomasz Adamek. Boytsov and Solis are almost ready, and now Helenius is skyrocketting up, set to fight Brewster next. If he wins, he is right in the thick of it. Alexander Ustinov looks like a good fight for Vitaly shoudl he keep winning. Peter and Arreola have might actually have learned their lessons, and though they are on the outs right now, these two exciting punchers might come back better than ever. Virchis, Dimentrenko and Lyakovich are giving it another shot. Sultan and Chag have talked about it. At least one of these guys can get back into it (my money would be on Sultan if he does come back), and those who can't will at least provide good tests for the younger guys. Where the hell did this Pulev come from? Third pro fight and he beat Brewster's conquerer Olukun. Ray Austin is kind of in this category with some of the best wins of his career coming this year. And the British domestic circuit has some interesting fights to be made, with a revitalized Harrison, Chisora and Sexton, and the winner of the Fury-Mcdermott rematch. Though they seem to be on the slow track, Deontay Wilder and Tor Hammer are going to be fun to watch develope. If we can just convince Ruiz, Holyfield and Valuev to get out of the way! POST SCRIPT: call me crazy twice, but I would love to see Michael Grant win in December and work towards one last shot. With his size and power, I think he makes an asthetically good match up with Wlad.
Anything Cachibatches says is by definition incorrect and flawed. I haven't read his post. However the title of this post seems to be something I agree with. I suspect someone has hacked Cachibatches' account and posted something sensible. Either way it is worth saying. The heavy division is far from it's glory days, but there is enough there to be really interesting. There are enough interesting matchups, enough interesting fighters with experience and different styles. Yeah, definitely worth keeping an eye on the division.
I agree, its looking healthier. Haye and Chambers have emerged which has really helped things at the top end. Povetkin has disapointed with his inactivity but Boytsov's rep is improving and if Pov is not careful his countryman will overtake him. I guess it depends how you look at these things, if you want the next black, American KO artist that excites everybody and has an electric personality things look bleak. But if you at the division objectively its really improving compared to a lot of divisions, its better than many of them infact.
Sadly, I kind of agree here. A lot of people just can't get used to the idea that the division is mostly dominated by quiet, unassuming Eastern Europeans who are technically soild and fight in an effective but conservative fashion. Shame, really. Boxing is a great international sport. Brings people together.
Quiet, unassuming, Eastern European, technically solid and effective but conservative or not, I think what people really want is someone to give one of the Klitschko's a fight, regardless of the race or country.
There are people that will give the Klitschko's a fight, I believe. Always thought Povetkin would give Vitali especially a run for his money. David Haye is a threat to Wladimir. Chambers probably isn't a huge threat but I'd like to find out for sure. Boytsov is coming up and could be the real deal, he can be aggressive or counterpunch, he can punch like a mule.
Hopefully Haye or Boytsov. I even still hold out hope for Povetkin, and agree with TFFP that Vitaly would be the better match up for him.
ur absolutely right cachi, ther has been new life breathed into the HW division. This is one of the reasons you have to respect David Haye, proved he can really hold his own in this division. Now you've got Povetkin, Chambers, knocking at the door of a title. As well as Tua, and Adamek, even Peter and Arreola. There are definitely some scenarios out there for an exciting 2010 in the HW division:good
I even forgot Adamek and Tua. I think we realistically have to be careful before getting too excited by these guys. They both need to prove certain things before they are a threat again to the top fighters. Tua needs to fight a tougher opponent and show he not only still has power and handspeed for a few rounds but everything else needed to compete at the top level. I am confident he will do that, he seems to have found the motivation to train hard and achieve it. As for Adamek, Haye's come up from cruiser quickly but he is a bigger man that carries the weight a lot more convincing than Adamek seemed to. Haye has always been known for knockout power and Adamek isn't quite the same in that aspect. He's also not the most difficult to find which is a bit concerning. I think Adamek needs a very sensible progression, Golota was a heavy bag.
We don't yet know what Adamek can do at HW, but he's a tough SOB that will never quit in a Klitschko fight. People are not putting him on their radar just yet since he hasn't yet faced a viable HW contender. However, what you cannot dismiss is the absolutly strong marketing forces that will do everything to bring this fight together, pending Adamek's win or two going forward. If this happens you can bank that this fight will occur and would be a huge seller in either Germany, Chicago or Jersey. He's already planning a fight in January to prep for Klitschko and according to Duva, he will box in both CW and HW divisions, taking on the best fights that come his way. Premature you say? Klit camp already called him a month before the Golota fight to pitch an offer for a fight, even before he entered the division. I like all the other hot contenders at HW (note: they tend to be small fighters, with better conditioning and good skill) but based on Adamek's pop, chin and mentality I give him the best chance to have a good outcome in a championship fight. But time will tell whether this former light heavyweight can do anything.
on paper, doesnt look bad...but these guys have to fight each other and not waste fights fighting has beens like botha, mccline, barrett, sprott, ect or waste fights on journeyman guys who cant get out of round 2, jeremy bates, marcus rhode, chris koval type characters...or really any opponent Oleg Mascaev fights these days... these guys dont fight often enough to waste fights on a meaningless fight...threadstarted just mentiond 16 plus names..no reason why there cant be decent match ups made... but with that said, it aint gonna happen.... Haye- 3 fights in 2 years...and hes gonna waste one against john ruiz....and by doing that, it will be a full year by the time he makes his 2nd defense povetkin hasnt fought in 7 months...will be a year in between fights when he does kev johnson and vitali is a done deal arreola- no fight in sight or talks of one wlad will only have 1 fight in 2009- nothing in stone as of his next fight sam peter had 2 gimmies with guys not even in top 100 and no fight planned as of yet chambers will end up having 2 total fights in 2009- i guess thats active these days- no fight scheduled since his fight in july Lyakovich - 3 fights in 3 years Sultan - 4 fights in 3 years (hasnt fought in 20 months, nothing scheduled) Chagaev - 4 fights in 3 years Tua- 4 fights in 3 years....all against guys who werent top 25 guys.... O Solis- active and willing to step up, most wont risk it....we will get arreola vs estrada and probably chagev vs chazz wiherspoon i wouldnt get too excited i would be curious to keep track of all the guys you mention and see how many fights actually develop where they are fighting each other...so im not too excited because these guys are not gonna fight each other. i would love to see tua vs chagev or sultan, or sergei...but we are gonna get tua vs cliff couser or tua vs tye fields
You are a ray of sunshine, aren't you? Thats spoken with the cynicism of a true boxing fan. And there is more than a shread of truth to it.
