i dont post on here there often but this is something i posted on another forum today and thought i would like to throw it open here. I have been watching boxing for a good 25 years and cant remember a time i felt so down about the sport. Maybe it has a lot to do with the Haye fight falling through which i had tickets to but i think its more. I have slowly watch the sport fall away from public interest due to in general poor press coverage and lack of fights on open TV. Your average sport fan knows very little about the sport apart from Hatton or Calzaghe and a fighter like Haye who ticks all the right boxes to be a huge UK star seems to slip a lot of the time under the radar when he has to be one of the easiest fighters to market ever. With the constant cancallation of fights, mismatches and poor stoppages i understand why people are turned off the sport. I always watch whatever boxing is on the telly but recently didnt bother with FFN for the first time i can remember because i just couldnt be bothered. Now add this to Setanta having problems which effects their coverage (although Cotto-Clottey was great), ITV4 pulling out of boxing and the fact that Carl Froch wasnt even seen shown live i wonder where the sport is going. I love what Setanta do with the sport and enjoy the ITV4 bills but boxing needs to be on ITV or BBC more often for it to gain fans yet sports like canoeing are shown over boxing on the beeb. I few years back the BBC started showing a few Hatton, Calzaghe fights on a saturday afternoon the week after they happened and a promoter would be wise to try and do the same thing again to get fighters like Kel Brook, John Murray, Darren Barker, Darren Sutherland, Tyson Fury, George Groves etc more exposure hence increasing and interest in the sport. Yes i know a lot of the fighters i mentioned are still fighting mismatches but i am talking about their future fights. Ok my rant is over and as i said i'm not new to the sport i'm old school but down in the dumps, how do you feel?
:nono No I can see why you are on a 'boxing down', a lot of fights have been breaking down and terrestrial coverage is almost non-existent. Although I would say don't worry because there are some true super fights that could be made at the end of the year.
i almost change my flight after the Haye fight fell through to come to london and watch the khan bill
I tottaly agree i enjoy nothing more than sitting down on a saturady nite and watching the boxing on itv etc, to me itv is your grass roots of boxing and is a good way of seeing the up and coming young boxers, shame... Im pissed of too. :fire
Sad thing is I think we may be ending up with Sky as our only choice So expect alot more of Warrens B list fighters like this Fridays card
I'd would be nice if boxing was a huge, mainstream sport. But its not something that bothers me all that much. As long as their is consistent coverage of the big fights I don't care if its only a hardcore group of boxing die-hards who watch them. I've already accepted that boxing is a niche sport, and for me that makes it all the more special. I feel privileged to be a boxing fan, I feel like I'm in on a great little secret that only a few people know about.
Ha Ha Hoya spot on mate. I have this mate at home who talks rubbish about boxing all the time. He has just started getting into the sport and talks shite and it gets me annoyed that he starts trying to pick up on my boxing knowledge when 2 years ago he claimed Hatton would leather Mayweather (even going as far as putting money on it) and then sitting in my house watching the fight and claiming that Hatton was winning most rounds. I agree that its good to know that I genuinely love and know about the sport, instead of being one of these fans that talk about it because its a macho sport to be involved with. I know I dont like Calzaghe and give him **** on here but I do give him props for what he achieved and when I try and discuss the simple things with him he wont even accept anything I say. One day he said "he can't be **** he was unbeaten in 50 fights" I said "Nah it was 46 mate not 50". He argued about that and (once again) made a bet with me. he said yeah it was definately 50 coz he went 1 better than Marciano. ha ha. I dont mind who else watches it to be honest. hatton generated a lot of puplicity over in the UK for the sport but lets be honest half of his fans are football fans jumping on the bandwagon who know **** all about it, so sometimes IMO less is better
I like boxing not being main stream to be honest. Every time i watch a Hatton fight all the football fans crawl out the woodwork, trying to tell me how Hatton will destroy who ever he is fighting with a body shot, but only if he doesn't get hit with a check hook . Anyone can be a boxing fan when they watch a war like Gatti vs Ward, Izzy Vs Marquez but when it comes down to technical fighters they all call it boring. UFC is something all my mates watch and i have to say some of the comments they come off with is a joke for people that call themselves fans.
i feel your pain sir,, i think that alot of your disappointment is down to the recession and broadcasters debts.re;the calling off of the haye/klitschko and valuev/chagaev fights.i think it's pretty obvious that this is the underlying factor in these cases. it is a fact that fights will inevitably be called off/cancelled due to injuries, weight etc.it's just a shame that it has happened all at the start of this year. i must admit i was looking forward to this summer more then any because of the haye fight and feel bitterly disappointed.but you can guarentee not as disappointed as haye himself, who with adam booth worked tremendously hard to jockey themselves into position at a shot. as for being down about boxing??,never!.i do what i always do and delve into my dvd collection of the golden era of heavyweights,or the rise of hamed,or benn/eubank.there is always an up side to being down! :good:good
i to love going back through my DVD and vhs collections and watching great eras but dont want to have to do that. I want to believe there is hope for the sport and the next great era is just round the corner. However , every time boxing shots itself in the foot i see that day getting further and further away.
Ahh BIGMARK my bro posts on boxrec says your pretty knowledgeable thats right i prefer being in a sport where its mostly hardcore fans. boxing always goes through bad patches but it will come back through and in a bad patch thats why theres old fights to watch
I've had the same conversations before. I don't know if everyone is the same, but I'm always on the look out for other proper boxing fans in everday life. I usually ask the question 'do you like boxing?' to most guys around our age, in the hope of finding someone to actually have a proper conversation about boxing with. Never seems to happen though and it always ends up that if they know anything at all, its just the raw basics of the sport, I.e 'the last fight I watched was when Hatton got beat by that guy, Pucweenow'.
