Agreed. All this "Calzaghe ducked Glen Johnson" crap is just a myth started by some U.S. idiots on the general forum and perpetuated by people who don't have the knowledge of the sport to understand the situation. For one thing, Johnson's record at 168 was appalling. Had they fought at that stage, he would have been passed off as another "joke" opponent by the haters. As for the time they were supposed to fight, what can you do about hand injuries? If a 168 fighter doesn't want to fight a 175 fighter, it's simple. You just say "thanks for the offer, but I'm staying at 168 for the time being". You don't sign the fight and then reschedule it after getting injured.

I like Johnson's attitude, but this whole idea of him being a feared elite fighter who JC was afraid of is just crap started by ignorant Americans who don't know the sport and think knocking out the shell of Roy Jones makes a legend. Johnson has some good wins and his longevity is impressive, but he has lost more than he's won against world class opposition. Including losing to Sheika who Calzaghe whupped, Vanderpool (who was stopped by Lacy - let's not even start on what Calzaghe did to him), Woods (easily outpointed by Starie) and a number of other "decent" rather than elite guys.

Calzaghe's career wasn't perfect, but when all's said and done he had a pretty good one and bringing up Glen Johnson smacks of either desparate hating or pure lack of knowledge!

Still waiting to hear why if Glenn Johnson was such a **** opponent did Calzaghe sign twice to fight him? (and pull out both times "injured" - back I think, not hands) What possible motivation could there be for a future HoF shoe in in taking on a dead body like Johnson? More evidence of Calzaghe cherry picking??

 

Nobody's said he was a dead body (or I haven't anyway), just that he was never elite as some of the idiot American public who only see "KO9 Roy Jones" on his record seem to think. He was/is a decent top 10 contender and fair enough some of those losses were arguable decisions/robberies (I do not buy that all of them were as he claims, for example the third Woods fight I thought he lost legitimately). As for the motivation in Calzaghe taking him in, fairly simple, he was moving up to a new weight (a plan which was later abandoned) and wanted an opponent who was decent but not top 5 level to test the water against. Plenty of fighters do it (Mosley taking on Rivera for his first bout at welter, Morales taking on the faded Kelley at feather, Roy Jones v Merqui Sosa at light heavy, Pac v David Diaz at lightweight).

Just to offer soome further background, this article from BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/3834557.stm confirms that it was Johnson's camp who ended the negotiations after Calzaghe was forced to pull out (you're correct it was a back injury not hand, my memory is playing tricks). However, the point still remains, Johnson was a couple of wins over Harding and Woods removed from a run of 6 losses in 8. Again, nobody ever talked about him as even close to elite until his win over Jones and then suddenly the revisionist historians started screaming "look Calzaghe ducked him". It's beyond farcical really.

If he's refering to my post about the "Marciano and Louis comparison", read it yourself, its fact not opinion that if Calzaghe would have sucessfully defended his WBO title four more times, he would be in the record books at 50-0 and 25 defenses, i dont agree with most of his defenses, but they are still classed as such.

I NEVER have and NEVER would condone placing Calzaghe in the same league as Marciano and Louis, nor have i said Calzaghe never ducked anybody.

you dont see pietersen doing a forward drive in photos, rooney pretending he's doing keepy uppys, or andy murray doing topspin airshots. its quite a strange phenomenon.

I have to agree, bit of a stupid thing to do, just makes you look like a keyboard warrior really.

If you start a thread like you have done Jeff, it was only a matter of time before someone was going to bring up your boxing record and compare to JC's. No matter what you think about JC, even if you think he is crap, he's far exceeded anything you managed to do with your boxing Career. It just comes across as being sour grapes.

its way more easy to undermine someone like JC than a domestic fighter becouse they have acheived or say they have acheived greatness,when infact he did nothing but damage his rep by fighting RRJ in that joke of a fight,it was a disgrace in my eyes,a complete waste of 48mins of me life and everyone else.
he wasent the greatest fighter,most skilled,most exciting fighter or biggest banger out there,he retired becouse hop was calling him out and would of prob beat him this time and dident want to lose his 0,a lot of people are right about him on here,not the biggest of balls in his shorts:happy

 

No offense mate but this **** really does get annoying. First Dawson, then Froch, then Hopkins. It's like people begrudge a guy retiring at the top. He retired because he wasn't motivated to fight anymore, simple as that. No more, no less.
