I think Roy was a great fighter, but don't try and tell me he could have beaten Michael Spinks, Bob Foster, Ezzard Charles ,and some other assassins at 175. He couldn't, in my less than humble opinion..... because of his chin.

That's the reality for today's prospects or journeymen w/o the personal finances, knowledge and political connections to get around testing.

What's more humorous is your belief that a sport with NO drug testing at all (early- mid 90s) has the same level of abuse as today.

I was hoping after the Ruiz fight he went down to cruiser and get a belt there and retire.

I don't know that your claim that there was no testing whatsoever in the 90s is true. You could be right but I don't know that to be a fact

What has changed is boxers know a lot more about how to benefit from PEDs without also walking into the ring looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger. There is rampant PED use in every major professional sport despite their claims of ridged testing. Boxing of all sports is the easiest to get around because your only tested before and after fights. as long as you know what your doing you can take whatever you want and beat every test there is. PEDs are in the fabric of pro sports it's just the way it is

Form my understanding PEDs in 90s sports were very much anabolic steroid based which is why so many of the guys looked like bodybuilders, they literally got their gear from bodybuilders. Look up Evan Fields friendship with former Mr. Olympia Lee Haney who helped build up his body for his move to HW. Mark McGuire's brother was a bodybuilder etc.

Now it's less anabolic needles in the ass in the locker room and more harder to detect HGH and EPO, things that help with injury/training recovery and stamina.

It's hard to nail down a specific date because boxing is such a disorganized sport. The NSAC started implementing some very basic testing in December 1997. Before then PED testing was just non-existent. The medical screenings were also complete joke, they didn't even test for HIV until like 1995, which is insane.

Anyways, yeah, I have no doubt nearly all of the top guys today are on some sort of protocol but there's a big difference between periodically microdosing on short ester compounds (Winstrol, Nandrolone, Test P etc) and having carte blanche to do anything under the sun all year round.

There are much tougher drug testing laws, so, no, it won't be seen again.

The mid to late 90's & early 2000's were the golden era of BALCO and undetectable Ped's. It was not just anabolic bodybuilder steroids but a whole bunch of specifically designed & targeted, undetectable substances.

It all started crashing down in 2002-03 when the investigation brought it to light and is it a coincidence that that's when Roy's career turned to crap? Could be, but a lot of these athletes came back down to earth.

Roy Jones was already 35 by then and had dropped a lot of muscle to boil back down to 175. Have you ever seen Roy Jones during the Olympics or early in his career? The man always had other worldly talent, attributing that to peds is pretty naive and idiotic. Roy Jones obviously used steroids /pedsto bulk up to the heavier weights just like every modern fighter but he was always a phenom. His daddy trained him to near death as a kid and he pretty much mastered every form of boxing by the time he was 25.

Roy Jones was phenomenal in his prime. One of the most athletically gifted fighters ive ever seen in the last 30 years. Its too bad he didnt retire after Ruiz, his Legacy would have been greater even without Darius.

I liked Roy... But to compare him to a Jordan or Brady is silly from an accomplishment perspective.
If we are talking more athletic ability I'd still say we are more likely to see another RJJ than a Barry Sanders. THAT guy was a freak of nature.
