Well perhaps he should prove it against the likes of Haye and not the likes of Sosnowski etc.:yep

There is a thread on this page lauding David Haye for choosing to fight the guy Vitali beat in four rounds on his last time out.

Vitali had the HW division in his hands. Then he had to retire because of an unfortunate injury. While he was out Wladimir become the champion of the division.
Vitali then later on comeback to become a belt holder. Wladimir has been the top guy at HW ever since he beat Byrd in the rematch, and he has been beating everyone who tried to take away his crown.
I rate Vitali as the better fighter with a significantly weaker resume, Vitali could have been in Wladimir's position right now, and perhaps have been known as an even better champion. But it didn't play out like that.

 so if Lewis comes back should we pretend he's the best heavyweight.

You either are, or are not, the best, records only serve to provide evidence for something which is already the case. What exactly 'best' is, that is somewhat more debatable - in reality it certainly isn't transferred like a lineal championship (or like the ring title, which is rather unreliable these days).
Lineal titles are nice that they provide historical continuity, and the 'winner stays on' mentality covers a lot of the bases that people look for when trying to identify a champion, but ultimately all a lineal title defines is who is best out of two people fighting at that point in time, with some nostalgic historical emphasis to add a bit of weight. The winner may have lost on the same night to the 10 people below him, but just had the right style to steal a win over the champion - that's never going to be define as 'best' in my book.

Anyway, in the context of this thread, I don't care if Vitali could be considered lineal of any sort, it doesn't affect whether he is actually the best. Wlad would beat Vitali now, and also any other HW in the world. Vitali would beat most HWs, lose to his brother, and potentially have a few tough fights with some younger faster HWs (he may lose to Haye at this stage, which I think is part of the reason that he is no longer showing much interest in that). So Wlad is best.

Get a good ranking with the WBC and then Vitali can either fight him or forever be ridiculed for avoiding him. They also called out Fury who has a good ranking with the WBC. Are you able to see the pattern that emerges?

I genuinely don't see it being even debatable.

I mean he looked good against Peter, real good and he deserved the number 2 spot. But never at any point since his return has heb beat better opposition or performed at a higher level than wlad.

There was a bit when wlad got injured and was fighting Rahman whilst vitali was beating arreola and adamek that I thought he might actually overtake wlad but then wlad beat haye and parity was restored.

Vitali was a special talent who looked to be the heir apparent but injuries ruined that for him and little brother picked up the mantle. Considering vitali the number 1 since 04 is pretty much rewriting history.

Prime Vitali takes out Wlad but as for recent years, he's just been someone holding one of the main belts hostage and taking up room.

At one point Vitali was the best heavyweight in the world, but that point ain't right now. Nothing wrong with being #2, though.
